Commercial Description:
Premier Brands - the Canadian license holder for Headstrong Pale Ale - have taken the unique move of using the brand for a new beer that is not brewed at the original home of Headstrong, Montana's Big Hole Brewing. Headstrong Munich Lager is their new offering, and like the Pale Ale, it is contract brewed at Wellington for the Ontario market.

Re-rate: New 474 ml can: puts an amber-orange lager in the glass with a nice frothy 2 finger cap. Good lacing of the glass...moderately carbonated. The aroma is very promising...sweet caramel toasty-bready tones over a light whisp of medicinal hops . Up front the mouth feel is slick... medium body with fair malt spine...... caramunich sweetness becomes balanced by ample Piney-herbal Yakima nugget hopping....aromatic without being too bitter......at any rate the judicious use of hops and non standard lager yeast ( or warmer fermentation?) in this spicy Pacific NW amber variation works and gives it near perfect balance and a wet, spicy-malty finish that turns lightly metallic in the after taste...the 5.5 AVB seems to be just the ticket to make this a very satisfying session lager. Far from being a standard Munich lager this beer has many characteristics in common with California common steam beer ...and has a flavor profile similar to Anchor steam...perhaps that is the niche/vacuum this hoppy, malty, spicey lager seeks to fill. Well made...good malts...bold use of hops...well balanced...tastey, and most of all, very drinkable. A lager head’s staple beer.

Sweet cereal and bread-like grain with floral and lightly spicy hops in the nose. Brilliantly clear deep golden body is topped by a generous and foamy white head that lasts well and laces the sides of the glass. Breadlike malt flavour seems overly sweet and bitterness is late to arrive and not quite enough to take the edge off. Medium light body with overly prickly carbonation that is a bit harsh on the front of the tongue. Lager glass. Just above fridge temperature. Can (Brewery Creek, Jul-08).

This is sadly no longer brewed by Wellington. The 473 ml cans now sold at the LCBO are brewered in in states by Big Hole brewing. In an odd case, the wellington copy of headstrong was better, actually it was a lot better. This is still a good beer, but it is not nearly as good as it used to be when it was brewered by wellington. It is a shame. But oh well

Via trade with matt7125. Thanks! A nice helles with more flavor than most. Aroma was so so. Light malt and a hint of spiciness. Pour was a nice medium gold with a one finger white head. Taste was very hoppy for this style. A hint of citrus with bread and corn throughout. Dry bitter aftertaste. Very unique.

473 mL can. Pours a golden with moderate head. Aroma is nice and well balanced. Flavour is initially very spicy but yields to a sweet, dry, pleasant finish. Quite nice.

473 ml can, Shelburne, ON. Deep golden/amber colour, thin head. spicy malt aroma that is subdued by a sweet/corny smell. Quite carbonated with a sharp hop bite, but then a bit light. Not a bad offering but nothing like the Munich lagers of, dare I say, Munich.
