3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 12/20
Looks like I’m the first one to rate the 2004 batch. Tasted at times very much like the meat of the pumpkin, as it would be in a pie. Light creamy taste at times. Very light spices. An intimately drinkable beer, but more can be done to innovate for a spicy fall pumpkin beer. Great name and logo though.

3.7 AROMA 10/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 9/20
On tap at Heartland Brewery, 51rd Street and 6th Avenue, NYC. Clear golden amber ale having small diminishing head. Nice spicy (allspice or nutmeg?) aroma. No discernable carbonation. Medium bodied ale that starts with a slightly sweet malt with notable nutmeg flavor and slight bitterness. Finishes slightly dry with average length light bitterness. A nice drinkable pumpkin beer that will make you smile. Goes well with BBQ ribs.

3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
One of the better beers they had. Clear orange, light golden body. Small thin head. Sweet slightly spicy, malty aroma. Decent thin mouthfeel. Smooth.

3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
On tap at brew pub. Outside on a nice evening any decent beer is refreshing. Even if it is a style you are not fond of. The lack of flavor might actually be a plus for this beer making it very drinkable.

3.6 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Tap at Union Square. Pours a light rusty color, fantastic aroma of spices and pumpkin. Taste is mildly bitter, sweet and spicy. Fuller body than the rest of the heartland brews. Average palate, no aftertaste.

3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Looked almost exactly like the Octoberfest, a nice orange. Good pumpkin spice aroma. Very strong pumpkin spice taste. Highly recommended if you are a fan of pumpkin pie.

2.5 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 9/20
On tap at Heartland Brewery, Union Square location. Unfortunately this is kind of a shot in the dark rating, I can’t recall if I had the Smiling Pumpkin or Stumpkin, both were on tap during my visit earlier this month. Based upon the commercial description I’m guessing it was the Smiling Pumpkin. Anyway, it was an unimpressive combination of spice and alcohol.

3 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
sample: definitely better than anticipated, thought this would have been lifeless. The brew’s got all the usual pumpkin pie ingredients in taste and nose. The body is very thin while making it very drinkable, for this style particularly weak.

2.7 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20
On tap at the Union Square location
Heartland Smiling Pumpkin Ale is a clear orange color with a small, orange-tinted head. The aroma is light and non-descript while the flavor is also lacking in character.
