Heartwood Symposium Ale was brewed to commemorate the Brewers Association’s Craft Brewers Conference and BrewExpo America, April 7-10 2010 Chicago, Illinois. Brewers from fifteen Illinois breweries formed four teams, each creating a recipe and brewing it at Goose Island Beer Co: Imperial Stout, Imperial IPA, Scotch Style Wee Heavy and a Barley Wine Style Ale. All were aged separately in Bourbon barrels. The resulting Symposium ale is our taste-tested blend of all four batches.

A-pours a very dark brown color, transparent, tan head. S-bready malt up front, slightly earthy, dry oak with a touch of vanilla, quite woody, sweet malt in the back, tart cherries with a hint of booze. T-very sweet flavors, lots of sugars, earthy, nice notes of bourbon, strong flavor of oak and a light vanilla, cherries and plums in the back with a touch of booze. M-creamy and soft, strong carbonation to balance a chewy body, very crisp finish for such a creamy beer. D-very tasty with a nice balance of flavors ranging from the bready malt to the sweet dark fruits and a nice presence of the barrel.

6th June 2010. RBESG 10 Grand Tasting at the Brasserie 4:20 Warehouse. A huge thanks to our Brasserie 4:20 host - Alex - for throwing this rare beer on to the table towards the end of the tasting. Clear dark brown beer. Oaky nose. Light dry palate. Rich dark toffee oak, a little spicy as well. Some vanilla and coconut. Complex and sumptuous. Could do some damage with this! Finishes dry.

Thanks to Larry and Sherry at Crown. Not normally a fan of blends, but this brew was an exception. Aroma sweet. Barrel comes through, some wood. Sharp bourbon, but not too much. An enjoyable brew.

20100515 Sampled at PilsnerPeter’s 2nd Annual Spring Gathering. Major sweetness but nicely blended mix of huge beers. Creamy and buttery with nougat, vanilla, tobacco, plum. Hot hot hot alcohol, but a fun ounce. God forbid I had to work through a bottle of this stuff though.
