COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Heartwood Symposium Ale was brewed to commemorate the Brewers Association’s Craft Brewers Conference and BrewExpo America, April 7-10 2010 Chicago, Illinois. Brewers from fifteen Illinois breweries formed four teams, each creating a recipe and brewing it at Goose Island Beer Co: Imperial Stout, Imperial IPA, Scotch Style Wee Heavy and a Barley Wine Style Ale. All were aged separately in Bourbon barrels. The resulting Symposium ale is our taste-tested blend of all four batches.

Thanks to Larry and Sherry at Crown. Not normally a fan of blends, but this brew was an exception. Aroma sweet. Barrel comes through, some wood. Sharp bourbon, but not too much. An enjoyable brew.

Bottle generously shared at RBWG. Pours a hazy brown with a white head. Nose is port, sherry, some oak, slight oxidation, some prune, and some fruitiness. Flavor follows- aging like a nice port- nice fruitiness too. Medium in body and very complex.

Take a moment from time to time to remember that you are alive. I know this sounds a trifle obvious, but it is amazing how little time we take to remark upon this singular and gratifying fact. By the most astounding stroke of luck an infinitesimal portion of all the matter in the universe came together to create you and for the tiniest moment in the great span of eternity you have the incomparable privilege to exist.

Bottle at RBWG. Nose shows lots of oxidation, sweet malt, brown sugar. Flavor is also lightly sweet, barrel is more toned down with age, lots of brown sugar, lightly oxidized flavor. I probably like this more now than I would have enjoyed in fresh.

2/23/13. RBWG. Thanks, Preben! Amber pour, small khaki head. Nice BA aroma, sweet caramel and wood, with some barrel. Nice flavor that parallels with a touch of oxidation.

12oz bottle (thanks Josh for sharing!). Poured a deeper mahogany color with an off white head. Aromas of roast, bourbon, some smokiness, and some earth. Tastes of dark fruits, caramel, molasses, bourbon, brown sugar, and wood. On the sweeter side with the alcohol content well hidden.

FoBAB. Pours cloudy brown. Aroma of bourbon, wood, cherries, caramel. Vanilla flavor, boozy. Sort of a weird blend, but it is fairly good. Sweet.

Bottle pour at FoBAB 9. Pours a murky brownish red. Dark. Some soft head as well. Nose is a big blast of bourbon barrel. The hops have completely faded out of this one. Big vanilla and coconut and a ton of deep malt in there. On tasting, it is very deep in the malt, bready with some plum and cookie notes. Pretty straightforward and solid, but lacking complexity. A bit muddled? Okay.
