COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
We like to call this a Northwest Amber Lager, but it is often categorized as a Vienna style lager. The beer originally started out resembling a Steam Beer¯ style beer, but we’ve slowly been dropping the fermentation temperature to the point where it’s really just a lager beer, and too smooth, to fit that category. The color looks like a Vienna style lager, but the amount and type of hops, and the grain bill are quite different. We use Magnum and Cascade hops in this beer, and they blend well with the American (51%), German (43%) and British (6%) malts we use. The beer features strong hop character, along with smooth malt, caramel, and toffee flavors and aromas, with a refreshing bite in the finish. This beer goes really well with pulled pork and brisket. Doughy malts with some light citrus and floral notes. Taste us fairly dry and moderately bitter, somewhat medicinal with a bit of aspirin.

Thanks to Eugene for sharing this. Clear amber, white head. Caramel, toast, biscuit. Light body, lively carb, short finish, crisp and flawless as Heater Allen is.

UPDATED: DEC 9, 2014 Bottle from City Beer Store. The nose is yeasty with some hops. Taste is nutty, woody, creamy malt with a subtle floral, citrus bitterness that provides depth and complexity. Not over the top but definitely beyond a typical lager. Lively carbonation. Smooth mouth feel. Well balanced with a dry, slightly bitter finish. Excellent.

Bottle from Healthy Spirits. Pours orange copper with a clinging off-white head and a toffee aroma. There is a medium-bodied red malt flavor with a dry more bitter finish. A nice Vienna.

Bomber to half-pint glass (shared with the Mrs.). Bottled on 09/22/14. Looks good; a very hazy amberish orange with off-white head. Smells malty with notes of toffee, caramel, lager yeast, and some bitter hops. Tastes like it smells, but not as rich, with a touch of biscuit as well. Medium-bodied on the palate. A solid lager.

Bottled 9/22/14. Hazy amber brown color. Aroma is mild toasted and faintly caramel with some lightly bitter hops. Flavor grows strong on the hoppiness. Very simple, clean, just a wonderful beer. Too simple to add too many adjectives.

Bottle (bottled Apr 14, 2014). Head is initially average sized, frothy, white, mostly lasting. Body is medium amber. Aroma is lightly to moderately malty (toasted grain, cookie), lightly hoppy (flowers, apricot). Flavor is moderately sweet, lightly acidic, lightly bitter. Finish is lightly to moderately sweet, lightly acidic, lightly to moderately bitter. Medium body, watery texture, lively carbonation. Simple and mild and a bit too sweet, but clean and reasonably pleasant.

hopwine (383) - Bend, Oregon, USA - APR 18, 2014
Pours hazy orange-amber with a meringue-like dense off white head. Nose is grassy, citrusy, bready, biscuity, and toasty. Flavor begins grassy, some doughy bread takes over, some floral honey, followed by a biscuity, crackery, and toasty malt finish that lingers. Great balance, mouthfeel, and complexity for the style. Another almost perfect beer by the northwests most under appreciated brewer.

From bottle. Clear amber golden color with plenty of bubbles. Aroma is caramel malt, grassy hops, and hay. Taste is caramel, toffee, biscuit, grass, and a light citrusy bitterness. Smooth mouthfeel, with a good balance of sweet malts and light bitterness.
