COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This is our interpretation of the little known Schwarzbier, or “black beer” of Germany. I’m usually not a big fan of dark beers, so when I first tried a Schwarzbier, I was surprised that it didn’t have the harshness that I’d found in many dark beers. When I brew this, I use a lot of flavorful amber malts, and just enough black malt to get the color right – a total of nine different malts in all. The beer’s rich malt/espresso aroma, leads to complex malt, caramel, chocolate, and espresso flavors. There’s just enough hop bitterness to keep everything in balance. This is the perfect beer to serve with a barbecued steak or tri-tip. It’s also excellent with just about any chocolate dessert! (1.013 BG, 4.8%, 36 IBU, 27 SRM)

Very black pour, brownish head. Malty, smoky aroma. Lots of roasted malt flavor. Starts out more like a stout in flavor profile, but flavor doesn’t last--a clean finish more like a lager. Well done.

Tasted on 4/25/12 from a 650mL capped bomber bottle sent to me by hannont. Pours nearly black dark brown, with a thin beige head that leaves average lace. The nose is nutty with dark and milk chocolate, and a nice note of coffee. The flavor is much lighter up front, moving to the darker chocolate, cocoa nib, and coffee notes, with just a touch of nuttiness. The body is light with average carbonation and a long nutty coffee with milk and dark chocolate, and cocoa nib finish. This beer is awesome.

UPDATED: MAR 26, 2012 Deep mahogany, translucent at the edges, with a creamy tan head. Nose is fresh roast, black bread, bitter cocoa, and a touch of smoke. Flavor also has a rich and earthy umami quality. Body is thin, carb is soft, and abundant roasted dryness leads toward a lightly bitter, smoke-kissed finish. The light body, ample roast, and smoky dryness stunningly complements something like a rich chocolate ganache dessert. At 4.8%, you CAN have it with dessert because it is not already one in itself. My favorite schwarz.

Big thanks to Tom for this one! Pours a hazy brown with a slight copper hue and a brown head that dissipates nearly completely. Aroma has a good amount of espresso with some roasted malt and bread notes with a hint chocolate. Flavor has a good amount of roast and a hint of smoke with a bit of bitter chocolate and coffee in the finish.

Bottle - Pours rich mahogany, dark with a big foamy tan head. Nose is big rich malt, nutty with a hint of dark chocolate, coffee, and just a touch of smoke. A nice milkiness covers the whole thing. Taste is bold nutty dark bread, coffee grounds, and a thin milkiness. It’s bold, but extremely smooth--a little dry, but not astringent. The carbonation tingles a bit on the finish, but it’s not overbearing. Very nice stuff.

Bottle:   Cola in color, perhaps a bit darker, large beige head, froamy, with nice lacing.   Soft roasted malt nose, a little ash and charred wood.   Smooth malt base, not heavy, but fairly silky.   Mild sweetness, roasty but not acrid or bitter.   I had my doubts when I opened it, but glad I did!   Body and mouthfeel are moderate.   Clean roasty finish.   This one is straight forward and simple, but very clean and appealing.   Not my favorite style of beer, from the few that I have had I can say this one is pretty damn smooth.

22 oz. bottle from Roth’s Sunnyside Market, S.Salem. $4.29 black beer, with an excellent tan head, that seems so thick and creamy. Malty chocolate milk aromas, with a subtle hazlenut back ground. Taste is of mild esspresso coffee, semi-sweet chocolate and gooey caramel. Nice. Ok on the palate..has low carbonation, which i liked. Overall a very nice easy going beer.

Courtesy of sebletitje. Pours clear striking mahogany with thin off white head. The aroma is pretty bold with pleasing levels of earthiness, smooth smoke, chocolate and roasty malts. The taste is smooth and nearly creamy yet with a fairly thin body pushing up notes of roasty malts, chocolate, earthiness, bitter chocolate, a touch of spicy hops and faint smoke. The malts dry it out a bit into the finish. Smooth tasty sessionable solid brew.
