"Scots Pine Ale"
Introduced by the Vikings, spruce and pine ales were very popular in the Scottish Highlands until the end of the 19th century. Many early explorers, including Captain Cook, used spruce ale during long sea voyages since it prevented scurvy and ill health. Shetland spruce ale was said to "stimulate animal instincts" and give you twins. Alba is a triple style ale brewed to a traditional Highland recipe from Scots pine and spruce shoots pickled during early spring.Pure malted barley, is boiled with the young sprigs of pine for several hours then the fresh shoots of the spruce are added for a short infusion before fermentation.
A tawny brown strong ale with spruce aroma, rich malt texture, complex wood flavour and lingering finish.
Best drunk at room temperature from a wine goblet as an after dinner digestive.

Pours a hazy amber orange with with a foamy white head and good lacing. Sweet aroma of toffee and banana with some spruce and spice. Flavor is sweet, fruity and spicy like cinnamon apples and bananas with a hint of spruce. Toffee malt sweetness with some nutmeg. Medium bodied with a creamy mouthfeel and light carbonation. A surprising ale. Much sweeter than expected and fruitier. A little too sweet for me but still enjoyable. Would go well with a fruit dessert like an apple pie. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bottle. This is a weird one. Very honey forward and wet wood with loads of earthiness. Quite sweet though with a spritzy bitterness to finish. Not my kind of beer

Bottle at home, bought from somewhere in Buckingham. Close to the sell-by date for what it’s worth. Orange-brown, very hazy. Smell of malt, bit of orange peel. Spruce is there but not to the fore. Lovely taste, very moreish. Sweet with a bit of vegetable savoury. Sweetish finish almost reminiscent of a Belgian Tripel. The beer certainly grows on me. Wouldn’t mind another - some other time. For tonight this is enough.

Pours a deep golden almost amber color with a finger of eggshell foam. Nose is sweet honey, some toasted pinecone and even a hint of smoked malt. Palate follows with some deep forest pine like notes that mingle with a round honey sweetness and a lingering bitter finish.
