"Scots Pine Ale"
Introduced by the Vikings, spruce and pine ales were very popular in the Scottish Highlands until the end of the 19th century. Many early explorers, including Captain Cook, used spruce ale during long sea voyages since it prevented scurvy and ill health. Shetland spruce ale was said to "stimulate animal instincts" and give you twins. Alba is a triple style ale brewed to a traditional Highland recipe from Scots pine and spruce shoots pickled during early spring.Pure malted barley, is boiled with the young sprigs of pine for several hours then the fresh shoots of the spruce are added for a short infusion before fermentation.
A tawny brown strong ale with spruce aroma, rich malt texture, complex wood flavour and lingering finish.
Best drunk at room temperature from a wine goblet as an after dinner digestive.

Pours a hazy amber orange with with a foamy white head and good lacing. Sweet aroma of toffee and banana with some spruce and spice. Flavor is sweet, fruity and spicy like cinnamon apples and bananas with a hint of spruce. Toffee malt sweetness with some nutmeg. Medium bodied with a creamy mouthfeel and light carbonation. A surprising ale. Much sweeter than expected and fruitier. A little too sweet for me but still enjoyable. Would go well with a fruit dessert like an apple pie. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bottle from the LCBO. Pours a cloudy amber with a tiny white head that quickly disappears to a slight film. Nose is bread and caramel with some wood and berry. Taste is sweet honey and some cherries with enough bitterness that it is not cloying. Full slick mouth with soft carbonation and a chewy finish. Quite interesting as a sipper.

330ml bottle. Pours a hazy deep amber, with a small off-white head, which lasts reasonably and leaves good lacing. Fresh spruce and berry aromas mix with an odd, slightly off-putting Vegemite note. A prickly spruce flavour up front gives way to a blend of caramel malt sweetness and berry notes in the mid-palate. Fresh, cleansing pine and more berry make up the finish. An unusual but very enjoyable ale.

A pine aroma with a pale body, not much head after pouring yet still well carbonated. A very different flavor of pine and slightly fruity. -- rated via 'Find A Beer' for Blackberry 10

The aroma definitely could be stronger; wood, some resin and some malt, a little caramel, alcohol is also there. Clear, orangish-yellowish, small head that disappears completely. The taste is peculiar, honeyish, sweet and a bit sour, with practically no bitterness. Body a little below medium, soft carbonation, tart and sweetish finish. Frankly, I do not sense any spruce; the best connection I can think of between this and pine are pine nuts. It’s not bad but I can see why we’d switched to hops.

Poured from a bottle it is a slightly cloudy light amber color with a slight head. Let it come to took temperature as recommended and drank after finned. The aroma is of spruce and the taste is a sweet combination of honey flavor and pine that is refreshing after a meal. Very interesting the way it lingers on the palate

From a 33 cl bottle shared in Avon, NC. Pours hazy amber with a thin off white head. Aroma is of sweet pine. Flavors of caramel, butterscotch and spruce. On the sweet end of the spectrum. Smooth, viscous mouthfeel. A very lovely after dinner beer.
