"Scots Pine Ale"
Introduced by the Vikings, spruce and pine ales were very popular in the Scottish Highlands until the end of the 19th century. Many early explorers, including Captain Cook, used spruce ale during long sea voyages since it prevented scurvy and ill health. Shetland spruce ale was said to "stimulate animal instincts" and give you twins. Alba is a triple style ale brewed to a traditional Highland recipe from Scots pine and spruce shoots pickled during early spring.Pure malted barley, is boiled with the young sprigs of pine for several hours then the fresh shoots of the spruce are added for a short infusion before fermentation.
A tawny brown strong ale with spruce aroma, rich malt texture, complex wood flavour and lingering finish.
Best drunk at room temperature from a wine goblet as an after dinner digestive.

Effervescent brown pour with a slightly off-white head. Smells maltier and sweeter than expected, something like a stiff barley wine. Wow, what an interesting taste and palate. It’s like half barley / half Belgian Strong Ale. Just the right amount of carbonation. Not very complex, but better and different than I expected. Great one.

Pours clear deep golden with a off-white head. Aroma has notes of malt, caramel, alcohol and floral. Taste is medium sweet and light bitter with a slightly warm and fruity finish. Body is medium, texture is oily, carbonation is soft.

Pours a dark amber with a thin white head. Aroma is all alcohol and spruce. Taste is like a typical Scottish ale until the aftertaste. Wow! This has a nice fruity backend. This is nice. Not what I expected, but it sure is tasty.

330ml bottle from Appellation Wines. Pours clear amber, thin white head. Aromas of pine, spruce, caramel, butterscotch. Taste is more of the same, with an underlying herbal note. Good for a gruit.

11.2 oz bottle (Old Notes)-Pours an amber with a small head. Aroma of spruce, yeast, caramel, and malt. Taste of the same with a bit of alcohol. This medium to full bodied brew is not bad as I am not a fan of spruce in beer.

Flasche (33 cl) vom Bierzwerg-Online-Shop. (Test vom Mai 2013)

330ml bottle from Appleyards, Shrewsbury. Honestly didn’t expect a taste hit as big as this.. MASSIVE fruity flavour with bubblegum, spruce, pine, butterscotch and cointreau that permeates every drop of this wonderful drink. In fact in a blind tasting I’m not sure I’d even call this a beer.. more like a big fruity wine. Different and very tasty.
