"Scots Pine Ale"
Introduced by the Vikings, spruce and pine ales were very popular in the Scottish Highlands until the end of the 19th century. Many early explorers, including Captain Cook, used spruce ale during long sea voyages since it prevented scurvy and ill health. Shetland spruce ale was said to "stimulate animal instincts" and give you twins. Alba is a triple style ale brewed to a traditional Highland recipe from Scots pine and spruce shoots pickled during early spring.Pure malted barley, is boiled with the young sprigs of pine for several hours then the fresh shoots of the spruce are added for a short infusion before fermentation.
A tawny brown strong ale with spruce aroma, rich malt texture, complex wood flavour and lingering finish.
Best drunk at room temperature from a wine goblet as an after dinner digestive.

Pours a thick cloudy orangish brown with an medium off white head. Aroma is rich, malty and a bit on the lagery side. Slightly skunky. I really like the taste of this one. Good balance. Not to mention the pine and spruce that really shine through. Body and palate are perfect for the ABV. Very good. All those out there who are beer nuts like myself and have been exposed too much to American ales, should really step over to the Scottish and English brews.

Pours a deep golden almost amber color with a finger of eggshell foam. Nose is sweet honey, some toasted pinecone and even a hint of smoked malt. Palate follows with some deep forest pine like notes that mingle with a round honey sweetness and a lingering bitter finish.

Classical Scottish beer which, as most other beers from this brewery, intends to honour an ancient brewing technique, and may therefore be regarded as a ’historical beer’. Thinnish head, warm amber colour; rich and spicy aroma of gooseberry, bitter honey, some caramel and wood and an aromatic, hard-to-pin-down spiciness, which I suppose is the spruce that has been added; tastes fruity, malty and elegantly spicy with indeed a subtle accent of pine resin, as well as some woodiness. Interesting.

Bottle from the LCBO. Pours a cloudy amber with a tiny white head that quickly disappears to a slight film. Nose is bread and caramel with some wood and berry. Taste is sweet honey and some cherries with enough bitterness that it is not cloying. Full slick mouth with soft carbonation and a chewy finish. Quite interesting as a sipper.

330ml bottle. Pours a hazy deep amber, with a small off-white head, which lasts reasonably and leaves good lacing. Fresh spruce and berry aromas mix with an odd, slightly off-putting Vegemite note. A prickly spruce flavour up front gives way to a blend of caramel malt sweetness and berry notes in the mid-palate. Fresh, cleansing pine and more berry make up the finish. An unusual but very enjoyable ale.

A pine aroma with a pale body, not much head after pouring yet still well carbonated. A very different flavor of pine and slightly fruity. -- rated via 'Find A Beer' for Blackberry 10
