"Scots Pine Ale"
Introduced by the Vikings, spruce and pine ales were very popular in the Scottish Highlands until the end of the 19th century. Many early explorers, including Captain Cook, used spruce ale during long sea voyages since it prevented scurvy and ill health. Shetland spruce ale was said to "stimulate animal instincts" and give you twins. Alba is a triple style ale brewed to a traditional Highland recipe from Scots pine and spruce shoots pickled during early spring.Pure malted barley, is boiled with the young sprigs of pine for several hours then the fresh shoots of the spruce are added for a short infusion before fermentation.
A tawny brown strong ale with spruce aroma, rich malt texture, complex wood flavour and lingering finish.
Best drunk at room temperature from a wine goblet as an after dinner digestive.

Deciduous tree aroma! Sweet mouthfeel. Sugary sweet malts do I poor job hiding the extra alcohol. Seems like a decent ale that needlessly upped the alcohol content.

Malt with low carbonation. Wonderful drinking beer. No hop character true to style. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Originally rated January 2006. Forth of four brews from this brewer. Came in a gift pack, given by Buddybeer... many, many years ago. Stayed in my cellar, in total darkness for all this time. Best before date is way gone, February 2005. Here goes ! Pours a golden-brown colour with amber-red highlights. The head is small, but nice and creamy with minimal retention. The aromas are mostly of fruits, like berries, caramel and mild grain malt. Hmmm... very interesting taste. Berries are still present, candy, almost like bubble gum and syrup. Really is like jam flavours. Not too sweet though. Cannot find any pine, nor spruce in here. Wine resemblance are found here. I have noticed that all four brews are flat, as a result of the outdating. Many other reviews mention flat as well, so maybe this is normal. All I know is, all four beers are worth trying for sure (this one beind the favorite with the Elderberry Black Ale).

Oh wow... quite nice when fresh. The fruit is present, but still not too much (like my original review). Wondering where this fruit comes from ? A nice refreshing fruity ale.

Purs burnt orange, nice thick foamy head. Aroma is surprisingly malts-heavy - rich fruits like an english strong ale. Bit of woodsiness behind. Pine comes through more noticeably in the taste, really from start to finish. Very fresh, woodsiness. Tingly finish, quite unlike anything I’ve had. Relatively soft carbonation is lovely.

this was poured from cask into a pint glass. Poured a nice dark amber color with a small 1 inch head Very malty aromas with herbal spices, caramel, malts and some fruitcake aromas too. Very complex and aromatic medium/full bodied but lacking somewhat on the feel. Very good flavors with lots of herbal spices, fruitcake, malts and even some dark red cherries this was a real quality beer. Very good aromas and really well balanced

Pours orange-gold. Intensely woody aroma - condensed autumn evergreen. Smoky, woody taste with a lot of malt sweetness. Nicely carbonated, and lingers on the palate in just the right way. I enjoyed this a lot. Food pairing suggestions: roasted squash, maple-glazed meats.

Bottle with Carla. Pours gold/orainge with minimal off-white foam. Smells sweet of raspberries. Tastes sweet with lots of raspberry and hints of beet sugar and alcohol.
