"Scots Pine Ale"
Introduced by the Vikings, spruce and pine ales were very popular in the Scottish Highlands until the end of the 19th century. Many early explorers, including Captain Cook, used spruce ale during long sea voyages since it prevented scurvy and ill health. Shetland spruce ale was said to "stimulate animal instincts" and give you twins. Alba is a triple style ale brewed to a traditional Highland recipe from Scots pine and spruce shoots pickled during early spring.Pure malted barley, is boiled with the young sprigs of pine for several hours then the fresh shoots of the spruce are added for a short infusion before fermentation.
A tawny brown strong ale with spruce aroma, rich malt texture, complex wood flavour and lingering finish.
Best drunk at room temperature from a wine goblet as an after dinner digestive.

I couldn’t get past the aroma of this beer. It was paint thinner thru and thru. I got no pine, no berries, no nothing more than a sweet paint thinner aroma. Appearance was dark caramel in color. Taste was slightly banana and a other fruits, slightly hoppy/pine characters, so it is drinkable. Overall I was rather off-put on the nose. I think this was my first beer where I picked up paint thinner.

Sweet malt and fruit aroma. Flavour reminiscent of raspberry, chocolate and some other dark fruits. Alcohol noticeable in the finish. Interesting spruciness develops but I was hoping for a whole lot more than that. Maybe if it were fresher?

Interesting beer... was expecting more of a brown ale type beer and so was pleasantly surprised. Great flavor. There was a lot of sediment floating around in the beer, which was either cool or gross, I can’t decide. But I would recommend this for sure.

Interesting, with a but of a fruity eucalyptus nose. Very earthy, with some mineral flavors, butterscotch, some spices and dry vegetal flavors, with some very light but very true pine and spruce earthiness. Definitely unique.

Very sort of menthol taste and aroma takes a little getting used to, plain cola looking body without any sort of head. Medium body, interesting and certainly worth trying.

Pine? Didn’t seem like much of it, but it had a great flavor that I can’t pinpoint, Sweet, with spice, almost like a christmas ale, but sweeter, maybe an candi sugar/liqourice flavor, good, but a little too sweet.

Hazy amber colour, decent bubbly head. Oak, soy sauce, pine, mushrooms and earth in aroma. Flavour is slight vinous, sweet & spicy with some wood-ish hints. Some sweetened liquorice is present. Bitter and somewhat acidic finish.

Ok, this one was odd, indeed. I almost feel guilty for giving it high marks in any category, but for what they were trying to do, they did it pretty nicely. The pour was amber orange with over an inch of head and great lacing. The head sustained itself quite nicely. Aroma was mostly spicey with some light pine and fruits. The flavor was outstanding FOR WHAT IT CLAIMED TO BE, much more pleasant than the pine from outrageous amounts of American hops, anyway (oooo, scorn me all you IPA purists, I don’t care). Spruce and pine were nicely done and really made this one fun for novelty purposes. Some berry type flavors in the background. That being said, this isn’t one I’d just go drinking any old day. This is a beer you do for the experience.
