Commercial Description:
Bottled. A cask version at 6% is produced in March and April.
"Scots Pine Ale"
Introduced by the Vikings, spruce and pine ales were very popular in the Scottish Highlands until the end of the 19th century. Many early explorers, including Captain Cook, used spruce ale during long sea voyages since it prevented scurvy and ill health. Shetland spruce ale was said to "stimulate animal instincts" and give you twins. Alba is a triple style ale brewed to a traditional Highland recipe from Scots pine and spruce shoots pickled during early spring.Pure malted barley, is boiled with the young sprigs of pine for several hours then the fresh shoots of the spruce are added for a short infusion before fermentation.
A tawny brown strong ale with spruce aroma, rich malt texture, complex wood flavour and lingering finish.
Best drunk at room temperature from a wine goblet as an after dinner digestive.

I would be satisfied with just smelling this beer - drinking it is an added bonus! Fruity on the nose, despite a fast-disappearing head. Very earthy tones that went down smooth. A must try in my book.

0,33l bottle. Small white head which disappears quickly. Copper-ruby colour and an incredibly sweet, malty, burned aroma. The pine can clearly be tasted and reminds me of Finnish pine-aroma sauna. The aftertaste is fresh and dry. Truly one of the more spectalular beer experiences.

Clear copper body with a frothy white head. Sweet fruit and caramel aroma. Flavor of fruit, pine and noticable licorice

Sweet, marshmellow, pine, chocolate aroma. The flavor is similar to the aroma though doesn’t work as gracefully. There is a rich hazelnut flavor, oak, a touch of pine, though it is very thin and there is a big alcohol kick, especially for 7.5%.

From a slender 11.2 oz. brown bottle with a blurb and a notched best before date on the right side of front label, Feb/2007. Served at cellar temperature. Made a decent appearance, poured a reddish and orange hued amber with a small foamy, fizzy topped pale tannish head that settled into a thin bubbly lacing, moderate carbonation overall. Had a piney, and yes, spruce, and an apple, pear fruity nose with a faint herbal and earthy background. A crisp, smooth medium bodied mouth feel, good drinkability. Piney, spruce, spicy and apple fruity taste, a earthy herbal bitterness, a nice alcohol warmth towards the middle and a spruce, herbal and fruity finish, a bit on the dry side. A nice herbed ale, tasty and balanced, well worth trying.

Pours a murky reddish brown, white head. This was good, not overpowering on anything. Nice brown sugar and caramel sweetness, along with dark fruits, roasted malt, no pine though? Everything blended great and very drinkable.

12 oz. bottle from BevMo LaJolla. Pours clear, rich cherry mahogany color with a large off-white head leaving stringy lace. Aroma is fascinating, piney, syrupy, oily, herbal notes, maple and rosemary. Flavor is like sweet malt syrup infused with pine oil, bitter grass adn herbs - like I imagine Pine-Sol might taste. Medium body, gentle carbonation. This one got much more pungent and potent as it warmed, definitely one of the most interesting beers I’ve had, but the flavor just didn’t do it for me.

Wasn’t too sure what to expect with this one, but was pleasantly surprised. Sweet caramel flavors, a good combination of spices and bitterness. Good stuff.
