Commercial Description:

"Scots Pine Ale"
Introduced by the Vikings, spruce and pine ales were very popular in the Scottish Highlands until the end of the 19th century. Many early explorers, including Captain Cook, used spruce ale during long sea voyages since it prevented scurvy and ill health. Shetland spruce ale was said to "stimulate animal instincts" and give you twins. Alba is a triple style ale brewed to a traditional Highland recipe from Scots pine and spruce shoots pickled during early spring.Pure malted barley, is boiled with the young sprigs of pine for several hours then the fresh shoots of the spruce are added for a short infusion before fermentation.
A tawny brown strong ale with spruce aroma, rich malt texture, complex wood flavour and lingering finish.
Best drunk at room temperature from a wine goblet as an after dinner digestive.

Plain and simply brown in color with massive gray flakes floating every where, no cap was produced, if I didn’t pour this my self I would swear this was a giant glass of ditch water. A strong nutty wood aroma and a pleasant alcohol presence, warm the palate, plums dates and other dark fruits add more to this intriguing pleasant sent. Intensely sweet nutty flavor, and something that reminds me of black forest cake lingers at the back of my throat, such a strange flavor I want to give it a 4 and a 8 at the same time. There is so much intense flavor going on here, its slightly ruined by the thin and chunky (frosted flake like chunks) mouth feel. I want to try this brew again but I’m scared to at the same time

Pours a clear orange/yellow, with decent white head. Sweet malt, pine needles, spruce, berries, and some earthy grain. An interesting brew, and quite enjoyable.

A hazy golden brown beer. Despite a vigorous pour almost no head raised. Sweet fruit, spice, and alcohol comprise the aroma. In the mouth this beer has no carbonation and no zing. It offers complex fruit and spice to match. The alcohol provides a touch of warming. An interesting beer that does a decent job of reproducing an ancient style.

I love trying these Traditional Ales! The aroma is malty, fruity, hardly any spruce (!?!). The appearance is semi-clear, amber in color, white head. The flavor is surprisingly sweet, fruits, berries, caramel. Slight flavor of red wine. The pine only comes through on the finish (in older times, this must be what they used in lieu of hops). Very enjoyable ale overall. Medium, oily mouthfeel. Although I often try these traditional or ancient beer styles for the sake of trying them, this is a great beer in its own right.

Bottle: Slightly hazy deep orange with a well retained tan film. Sweet and spicy aroma- toasted vanilla notes, light plum and fig with only a touch of sweet spruce in there. Nice fluffy feel with an interesting flavor. Light vanilla and toasted malt provides a base- also some plummy/berry-ish fruitiness and sherry notes (aged quite a bit?) Some cedar notes as well with vegetal notes that are reminiscent of spruce, but it’s not explicit. Regardless of it beging past its prime its a well rounded and interesting brew. I wanna try a fresh one that will be more pine forward.

Speciale

Bottle. Pours bright orange with an off white head. Sweet aroma with fruit, honey and hints of pine needles. The flavor is also sweet with honey and fruity notes. The pine notes are present but don’t dominate. A pretty good and easy to drink beer that’s definitely worth trying.
