"Scots Pine Ale"
Introduced by the Vikings, spruce and pine ales were very popular in the Scottish Highlands until the end of the 19th century. Many early explorers, including Captain Cook, used spruce ale during long sea voyages since it prevented scurvy and ill health. Shetland spruce ale was said to "stimulate animal instincts" and give you twins. Alba is a triple style ale brewed to a traditional Highland recipe from Scots pine and spruce shoots pickled during early spring.Pure malted barley, is boiled with the young sprigs of pine for several hours then the fresh shoots of the spruce are added for a short infusion before fermentation.
A tawny brown strong ale with spruce aroma, rich malt texture, complex wood flavour and lingering finish.
Best drunk at room temperature from a wine goblet as an after dinner digestive.

Pours golden orange. Malty caramel toffee aroma. Taste is malty caramel with big pine wack. Not really for me

33cl, Scottish brew, with pine and spruce sprigs, from Bierzwerg Greven, complex brew, malty/fruity and slightly spicy/sweet, balanced, clear, small head, nice brew, yet original!

Aroma: Caramel, very strong, light notes of pine and resin Appearance: Small head, diminishing, murky liquor, amber hue. Taste: Very malty, medium body, a touch of spice, thanks to the alcohol, and notes of liquorice towards the end. Moderate bitterness, the finish is short. All this said, the beer is unbalanced: even though it’s only 7.5% it’s heavy, the maltiness hammers your mouth. The alcohol, though modest in its content, strives to give you a hard time, the resin notes don’t blend. Clearly not a favourite.

330ml bottle from the Home Brew Shop, Aldershot. Hazy amber with a thin off-white head; piney, earthy, aroma; sweet with a herbal vegetable taste that’s not entirely pleasant at first, but then developing a cream-soda style fruitiness;some warming alcohol to finish.

Pours amber. White head. Aroma is spruce, wood and butterscotch, taste is a pretty good blend between malt and spruce, with a smallish alcool burn. Overly sweet. Absolutely non-bitter, oily. It’s good, but not exactly terrific, and oversweetened. Probably my least favorite in the Historical Ales from Scotland pack.

Dark amber / brown colored beer. Smell and taste sweet and a little fruity. Very good mouthfeel, quite well balanced.

Bottle - Dark orange. Off white head.Medium carbonation and body. Sweet. Fruity (like a cross between raspberries and blueberries) Some pine and woodiness. Musty and earthy. Quite complex. Every mouthful gets better. Mild bitterness. Slightly dry finish. Certainly different.
