Commercial Description:
Bottled. A cask version at 6% is produced in March and April.
"Scots Pine Ale"
Introduced by the Vikings, spruce and pine ales were very popular in the Scottish Highlands until the end of the 19th century. Many early explorers, including Captain Cook, used spruce ale during long sea voyages since it prevented scurvy and ill health. Shetland spruce ale was said to "stimulate animal instincts" and give you twins. Alba is a triple style ale brewed to a traditional Highland recipe from Scots pine and spruce shoots pickled during early spring.Pure malted barley, is boiled with the young sprigs of pine for several hours then the fresh shoots of the spruce are added for a short infusion before fermentation.
A tawny brown strong ale with spruce aroma, rich malt texture, complex wood flavour and lingering finish.
Best drunk at room temperature from a wine goblet as an after dinner digestive.

This is the first taste of a beer that is made without hops. I expected much more from this. I was sure that the Pine and Spruce flavors would dominate...they did not. I’m not really sure I could taste any to be frank. There is an interesting floral after taste that lingers...not sure what it is but it’s pleasant. If your a home brewer that’s interested in brewing without hops, this is certainly a beer worth spending 30 minutes chewing on.

Pours a dark red color. Unusual scent (licorice?) Has a sweet taste and finish with a string floral bouquet. Very unusual beer.

Bottle - 330ml. marked best before Aug 2004. Nice hazy amber/orange body topped with a thick off-white foamy head. Lovely and complex malty/hoppy aroma with various notes of herbs, pine, flowers and roasted cereals. Taste keeps the alcohol well hidden. Solid and interesting combination of various herbal and fruity flavors that leaves a long, dry and bitter aftertaste that put the pine flavors on the stage. This is not for lager people. Thank you PrimeMinister!

Pours an orange color/ruddy color. Aroma is fairly sweet. Smells a bit like wine. Flavor is a little sweet and malty. Tastes a little odd to me.

This pours a murky orange/amber color with virtually no head and little carbonation. Light malt aroma with some molasses. Sweet and lightly acidic. This one is hard to place, having characteristics of a strong mild, or junior Barleywine. Not unpleasant, but I’m glad I just bought a single to try.

(Bottle) Pours a cloudy orangish-brown body with a small off-white head. Aroma of raisins and pear. No pine to be found? Sweet malt flavor with some fruit.

Hazy orange amber with a fruity musty aroma. Flavour is more of the same with a bit of sappy spruce shoot in there, I don’t notice any pine though.
