Commercial Description:
Bottled. A cask version at 6% is produced in March and April.
"Scots Pine Ale"
Introduced by the Vikings, spruce and pine ales were very popular in the Scottish Highlands until the end of the 19th century. Many early explorers, including Captain Cook, used spruce ale during long sea voyages since it prevented scurvy and ill health. Shetland spruce ale was said to "stimulate animal instincts" and give you twins. Alba is a triple style ale brewed to a traditional Highland recipe from Scots pine and spruce shoots pickled during early spring.Pure malted barley, is boiled with the young sprigs of pine for several hours then the fresh shoots of the spruce are added for a short infusion before fermentation.
A tawny brown strong ale with spruce aroma, rich malt texture, complex wood flavour and lingering finish.
Best drunk at room temperature from a wine goblet as an after dinner digestive.

The pour looks like brewed tea, dark orange and bubbly. Little to no head. Fresh, yet medicinal aroma with some pine and sprucey notes - also a smidgeon of maple syrup. Flavor has a tangy quality to it with some chewy fruity notes. Also has some nuttiness in there as well. I can see how this could be viewed as medicinal and healing. However, the Mouthfeel is a bit too tangy and the flavor is close to cloying near the end. Not an everyday ale - but a nice diversion.

Very interesting. Copper with weak white head. Nose had cherry candy, cough syrup, Maybe a hint of pine but not as expected. Medium bodied. The flavor was captivating. What is it? Hmmmm. It’s good but just what is it? Don’t know. The unusual taste made you want more if only to determine what that flavor was. I liked this beer.

Interesting to say the least. Amber in colour with just a little head. The nose is full of citrus and surprisingly pine, smells like an evergreen piece of gum. The taste is malty with again that kick of pine. Not all that bad. Easily drinkable, but probably wont drink again.

a nice berry, malty aroma. minimal head that quickly disappears, but remains as a ring ’round the glass. clear amber. nice ’n malty, then some taste of pine, but overall... it’s hard to put a finger on. not too entirely interesting, but very unique. i enjoy this beer quite a bit.

Medium amber color with a small head. Unusual aroma that is malty, sweet and spruce. Sweet woody flavor with tones of an unsusual pineyness. Deffinatly an unusual beer, good but not great, deffinatly a different experience.

Colour wise, this beer is a mixture of orange, red, and brown. Heady aromas of caramel malts, citrus, and sweeter berry fruit. It’s quite thick as far as mouthfeel goes, but it doesn’t seem to mesh well with the flavors of sweet fruit and malt. There’s a bit of the spruce and pine flavors there too, but not nearly as much as I would have liked or expected.
