"Scots Pine Ale"
Introduced by the Vikings, spruce and pine ales were very popular in the Scottish Highlands until the end of the 19th century. Many early explorers, including Captain Cook, used spruce ale during long sea voyages since it prevented scurvy and ill health. Shetland spruce ale was said to "stimulate animal instincts" and give you twins. Alba is a triple style ale brewed to a traditional Highland recipe from Scots pine and spruce shoots pickled during early spring.Pure malted barley, is boiled with the young sprigs of pine for several hours then the fresh shoots of the spruce are added for a short infusion before fermentation.
A tawny brown strong ale with spruce aroma, rich malt texture, complex wood flavour and lingering finish.
Best drunk at room temperature from a wine goblet as an after dinner digestive.

Bottle from a mixer of scottish ales (or more specifically - Ales from Scotland). It was a gift. Pours a cloudy red-orange, very nice looking glass of ale. Aroma is very sweet smelling, not what I was expecting. Very pleasant feeling in the mouth, the flavor is very holiday-ish, though with a twinge of sadness. Reminds of sitting in front of a fireplace at a children’s hospital. Interesting. Tastes red and green.

Fruity aroma immediately reminding me of certain Belgian yeast characteristics. Perfectly clear amber in appearance. Taste is malty bready sweetness. Herbal notes come in at the end. Not a bad beer at all, but nothing to write home about either.

Aroma: Medium-light wood, forest, Light spices, malt sweetness. Appearance: Body: Clear, amber. Head: almost none, tan. Flavour: Medium-high woody, pine, medium herb (spruce?). Medium bitterness. Light malty. Dry, herb-like finish with lingering flavours. Mouthfeel: Medium-light body, Medium-high, creamy carbonation. Overall: Very nice. Strong flavours and aromas, but not overpowering. Good malt support. I would bring the body up a bit, to balance the herb dryness. 330 ml bottle, poured. Thanks Andre! 23. Specialty Beer

330ml bottle [Thanks to Nico and Alex]. Murky golden to amber colour with small, creamy, half-way lasting, minimally lacing, grey-ish white head. Fruity aroma has a touch of condensed, sirupy pineapple, a herbal hoppy touch, gummy bear character. Taste is initially moderately sweet, close to white gummy bears, notes of pineapple, a herbal and woody touch, spruce; dry, fresh woody finish. Unusual, but not my cup of tea.

How: Bottle (end date: Apr 2015) Where: from Brewers Droop, Bristol Blood Alc: 0 mg/100ml The first aromas apparent to me as I open the bottle is of chelsea buns and sickly sweet lightly fllavoured cherries glazed with lemon. Aroma is boozy on the pour with a lot of fruity, earthy caramel sweetness. Now in the glass, the nose is a bit overpowering in the sense of the booze and grain lacking the more subtle aromas of more delicate sweet fruits and icing earlier. There is a freshness coming through on the nose though, but shielded by the other features. This beer poured much cloudier than expected to a murky brown, head is white and reasonable enough. Flavours are wood, fruit, some malt and close to the end comes that slightly zingy freshness, reminiscent of lemon, from the spruce. Again though, the malty complex fruitiness is quite overpowering and overshadows the subtler flavours which I feel the beer is really trying to showcase. The sense of cherry comes back at the very end and a strangely high bitterness for the style. Mouthfeel is as expected - neutral, I get the sense that somehow this beer doesn’t quite know which way it’s going, as though it’s trying to be light and dark at the same time - in some cases, such as with many Black IPA’s I have tried, this apparent beery contradiction can work very well, but here, it comes across confused and overcomplicated in my opinion. I would consider this a distinctly average high ABV beer, maybe even a bit below. Sorry guys. =53%
