"Scots Pine Ale"
Introduced by the Vikings, spruce and pine ales were very popular in the Scottish Highlands until the end of the 19th century. Many early explorers, including Captain Cook, used spruce ale during long sea voyages since it prevented scurvy and ill health. Shetland spruce ale was said to "stimulate animal instincts" and give you twins. Alba is a triple style ale brewed to a traditional Highland recipe from Scots pine and spruce shoots pickled during early spring.Pure malted barley, is boiled with the young sprigs of pine for several hours then the fresh shoots of the spruce are added for a short infusion before fermentation.
A tawny brown strong ale with spruce aroma, rich malt texture, complex wood flavour and lingering finish.
Best drunk at room temperature from a wine goblet as an after dinner digestive.

This beer very much resembles a pine syrup. It pours to a very clear amber color. Almost no head what so ever. It is very full bodied and very sweet. I can appreciate it’s historical heritage, but this will remain a novelty for me.

330ml bottle. Strong, delicious pine/spruce nose. Small head, pours deep brown. Sweet pine at first, and then a wonderful, subtle roasted malt flavor. Delicious.

Bottle from kappy’s. Aroma is malty and sweet with pine, go figure. Some fruity, sugary notes as well. Appearance is dark brown, hazy with a short, quickly disappearing head. Flavor is...strange. Definitely an ale flavor with malt and hops, but also piney and sweet. Certainly lives up to the description. Not a bad beer, but not one I’d reach for again. Finish is piney with lingering hops and slightly alcoholic. I would like to try this without the pine infusion as I think it would be a decent ale. Otherwise, it’s interesting but not my cup o’ beer.

Very good beer! Pours an orangish brown color with a light head. Very strong warm malty aroma. Taste is of malts and fruit. This is an intriguing brew full of flavor. I would gladly drink this again it’s delicious.

Appearance: Pours a clear reddish amber with two fingers of off-white head that quickly dissipates. Smell: Spicy malt with a hint of pine and a lot of fruit notes. Taste: Sweet and fruity up front, leading into a wonderful mix of malt, apples, caramel, and pine on an earthy background. Long soft finish. Mouthfeel: Smooth and full with light carbonation. Drinkability: An excellent strong ale with lots of depth.

Smokey winey and piney, this ale is a wonderful look at what beer was like back in the day (Okay, at least at a nostaglic sense). This beer pours like wine is oily and complexed. The strong malt sweetness makes perfect love to the pine and spruce flavoring. Hopheads be warned this is not your thing! But if you enjoy original, and unique beers try this one out! I also recommand all the beers from Heather Ales.

From bottle. Cloudy, amber color. Pleasant ale flavors, with a somewhat overpowering bitterness in the finish.

Go easy with this one - it definately has an effect on balance! A wonderfully unique flavour with a lot happening. Was it a honey tint, or more orangey? I'm still not sure - But at least that gives me an excuse to sample it a few more times "just to make my mind up!" *hic*

bottle from Whole Foods bowery. pours a dark orange-red. Interesting nose, almost nutty. Taste has licorice, maybe some other candy. sort of medicinal aftertaste, and very dry. Really interesting and complex.
