"Scots Pine Ale"
Introduced by the Vikings, spruce and pine ales were very popular in the Scottish Highlands until the end of the 19th century. Many early explorers, including Captain Cook, used spruce ale during long sea voyages since it prevented scurvy and ill health. Shetland spruce ale was said to "stimulate animal instincts" and give you twins. Alba is a triple style ale brewed to a traditional Highland recipe from Scots pine and spruce shoots pickled during early spring.Pure malted barley, is boiled with the young sprigs of pine for several hours then the fresh shoots of the spruce are added for a short infusion before fermentation.
A tawny brown strong ale with spruce aroma, rich malt texture, complex wood flavour and lingering finish.
Best drunk at room temperature from a wine goblet as an after dinner digestive.

11.2 oz bottle. Pours a light brown color with a small white quickly vanishing head. Smells of malt, berries and a touch of pine. Tastes of pine and a bit of resin with a little bit of a burnt and roasted taste with maybe a little toast, toffee, date and cola. This was well worth the price in my opinion. I enjoyed this one immensely. .

This beer pours a hazy light amber color with a thin head. Aroma is unusual for me. I know it’s the pine, but it comes across as a strawberry candy-like fragrance. I can get that fragrance a couple of times and it goes away. Taste is just as tricky. Sweet cotton candy that fades quickly to a malt background. Wow. Different. The sweetness seems to disappear after a few tastes, as well. This one plays with you. Really, really interesting and good - a must try!

I really liked this beer. I was actually hoping it would be even more ’piney’ but I think they did well by keeping it balanced. Definately one to try at least once, and I’ll definately be drinking it again (once I can find it; my bottle was given to me by a friend coming back from England). Enjoy!

Very impressive! Cloudy, with no sign of a head. Very winey and I served it at room temp. which really brought out those flavors. Would buy again, even at $5 a pop.

Cloudy dark brown amber with fine brilliant white head. Pine sap, malt, cherry? with some citrus on the nose. Slight prickle, pine mild malt, medium mouthfeel, lingering forest?, slight sweetness, with a drying finish. Nice and refreshing and strange to say the least.

Brown red pour with little head. Strong woody (pine I assume) scent with some sweet caramel. Low carbonation. Deep malty taste, blackberry and spice. The finish shines with flavour. Way better then I expected and the best of the "great ales of sctoland’ gift pack. Wish I knew how to get this on it’s own.

Going into this beer, I anticipated a brew much like the sap of a Christmas tree...how pleasantly surprised I was! This beer poured a hair darker that amber, swelled sweet-ish, and had a BIG flavour that hit every tastebud on the tongue. Definitely would drink it again.

Bottle 33 cl, served at room temperature in a trappist glass. Pours a dark reddish brown with a small head and a thin sweetish aroma. Sweet syruppy taste with a great herbal, almost medicine-like kick in the end. Bitter without hops, I really like this one. It’s geneous!

Bottle had on 7/27/09. Bottle said "Drink by August 2003" so at least 6 years old. Was kind of a risk picking it up at the bottle store, but what an amazing surprise. Pours pretty dark copper with nice eggshell colored head. Aroma of caramel and burnt toffee and only a hint of pine. Sweet caramel on the front of the tongue, then a slow pine sap finish with just a hint of maple. Pretty light and amazing mouthfeel. What a fantastic find! Definitely recommend aging this a bit.

Very good beer! Pours an orangish brown color with a light head. Very strong warm malty aroma. Taste is of malts and fruit. This is an intriguing brew full of flavor. I would gladly drink this again it’s delicious.
