"Scots Pine Ale"
Introduced by the Vikings, spruce and pine ales were very popular in the Scottish Highlands until the end of the 19th century. Many early explorers, including Captain Cook, used spruce ale during long sea voyages since it prevented scurvy and ill health. Shetland spruce ale was said to "stimulate animal instincts" and give you twins. Alba is a triple style ale brewed to a traditional Highland recipe from Scots pine and spruce shoots pickled during early spring.Pure malted barley, is boiled with the young sprigs of pine for several hours then the fresh shoots of the spruce are added for a short infusion before fermentation.
A tawny brown strong ale with spruce aroma, rich malt texture, complex wood flavour and lingering finish.
Best drunk at room temperature from a wine goblet as an after dinner digestive.

12oz bottle from the mystery swap box! - Thanks! - Pours murky light brown with a short bubbly offwhite head that stays well and laces in layers.. Aroma is quite malty with caramel and toffee, just a hint of pine there but not too much. Flavor is good caramel, raisins, a touch of toffee, and some nuts, and light spice before the casual pine finish. Medium bodied without much carbonation and a lingering sweet aftertaste. Not bad at all.

UPDATED: SEP 7, 2005 Bottle (330ml). Poured a very murky, lively amber-brown with an average very light tan tightly bubbled head. Quite a few medium and large light-coloured floaties. Aroma of sour wine, cider, yeasty moderately roasted malt, some evergreen mulch & resiny pine cones - overall quite tart. Taste is a tangy battle between fairly thick sweet roasted malts and slightly sour pine and spruce resins, with a little bit of hop tossed in to even out the finish, although that might be the pine outlasting the malt. Mouthfeel is quite thick and astringent from the "tree" components. This bottle may be a bit past its prime, but it held up well, despite the yeasties.

330ml bottle, best by April 09. Clear dark amber with no head. Nose is blackberry and raspberry over sweet malt with mild pine and a touch of citrus. Flavors are more berry, some herbal bitterness and a bit of pine. Rather dry finish, spicy and earthy. Damned interesting beer, and pretty drinkable.

UPDATED: NOV 19, 2005 Poured it too cold, let it reach room temperature and aromas/ flavors were much more present. Loved the sweet aroma, very pungent. Sticky feeling in mouth. Never had pine, so can’t say I know what it tastes like- but definitely some unusual tastes I can’t describe. Interesting and flavorsome brew.

11.2oz bottle, courtesy of my brother. Thanks, Phil! Pours a murky, slightly oily amber-orange color; thin off-white head. Generous amounts of floral notes, dried oranges, and caramel in the aroma; clean, crisp nose. Medium-to-full mouthfeel: relaxed carbonation; loads of caramel, dried fruits, and floral notes upfront; good levels of oiliness and viscosity throughout; generous, satisfying, and floral; reserved sweetness. Lengthy finish: caramel, dried fruits, and sweet malts; nicely balanced throughout.
