"Scots Pine Ale"
Introduced by the Vikings, spruce and pine ales were very popular in the Scottish Highlands until the end of the 19th century. Many early explorers, including Captain Cook, used spruce ale during long sea voyages since it prevented scurvy and ill health. Shetland spruce ale was said to "stimulate animal instincts" and give you twins. Alba is a triple style ale brewed to a traditional Highland recipe from Scots pine and spruce shoots pickled during early spring.Pure malted barley, is boiled with the young sprigs of pine for several hours then the fresh shoots of the spruce are added for a short infusion before fermentation.
A tawny brown strong ale with spruce aroma, rich malt texture, complex wood flavour and lingering finish.
Best drunk at room temperature from a wine goblet as an after dinner digestive.

What an aroma! Like eating a caramel in the woods during fall. Mine was brown and completely opaque, with a bit of discoloration near the top of the pour. The flavor doesn't seem the completely fit the aroma. Fairly smooth for something that is supposed to have 7.5% alcohol...a bit sweet, not bitter like other high alcohol content brews. I guess with a bit of imagination you could taste some pine in the aftertaste.

Another great change up from Legends. This tastes great and is entirely different from anything I’ve ever had. I couldn’t taste anything piney though, just different.

Amber with an off white head. Aroma is malty, caramel, light hoppiness, some roastiness, light smoke. Taste is berries, fruit, caramel, toffee, wood. I like this stuff.

Bought in the slimline 11.2 oz brown bottle with the rather ugly, I am afraid, label :-). Says on the back this is a "triple style ale" intresting. The beer certainlly looks very nice pours a small frothy off white head that goes fast but leaves reasonable lacing..the beer itself is a lovelly golden amber colour and is attractivlly hazy. The aroma is very complex a mix of strong sweet malts..some pineyness and floral hops.. The taste is good also very smooth thers sweet malts to start then a pine bite followed by slight hops and ends up with a nice slightly warming alcohol flavour. very smooth in the mouth..easy on the palate for this much alcohol. A very drinkable ale..will try again..i have tried spruce flavoured beeer before this is slightly better.

Malty pine aroma, with hints of the alcohol. Orange-tan with a slight haze and a cream head. Great flavor of a malty scotch (not scottish) ale with some woody/smoky character and pine notes. Nice aftertaste.

UPDATED: OCT 20, 2005 (on bottle) Remarkable, no less. By mistake our first bottle was served at about 12 degrees celcius; big mistake. This ale must be served at roomtemperature. The color is much as fresh cut pine, the raisin still runing. But the nose is very much spruce, sweet and acid as rasin. A very big mouthfull this one. Full of the above and no traces of either malts or hops. Allmost a cognagcish end; the alcohol raises in the mouth and makes the flavours work with ones breathing. Thanx for making this brew.

UPDATED: NOV 7, 2006 Bottle: Poured a hazy copper-brown ale in the glass with a fair cap that rediced to a surface cap and laced up the glass sides well. Aroma: Musty-earthy, grains, botanicals...light clover sweetness. Delightful profile: chewy caramel malts up front are quickly joined by a complex array of indigionous botaniocals...highland pine buds, spruce buds, highland meadow botanicals..then a light musty-earthy sweetness and into the finish which is wet, lingering, satisfying, herbal and lightly bittering. Damn I love these heather ales!!

Deep orange, crazy aromas of clover, blood oranges, and tootsie-roll toffee (no pine though!). Rich full bodied palate, chewy caramel malt with a woody and floral character. Nothing about this says it was associated with pine/spruce in any way, but it is excellent and unique regardless. Worth trying.

I’m extremely happy with this beer. It’s a nice beer for later in the evening; the alcoholic potency didn’t really hit me until it almost put me to sleep. Pours with a medium light brown creamy head on a hazy red-brown body. There are no hop aromas (since the beer contains none), just delicious malty ones. As the name suggests, lots of pine and spruce backed up with some creamy caramel. There are so many hints of spice (coriander?) you could never name them all. The body is oily slick with a little fizzy carbonation. Just the thing for indigestion! The rich and chewy texture carries the beer through a long finish. Flavors are those mentioned in aromatics.

Earthy pine, spuce, oak sawdust countered by cherry lemon blackberry peach tart sourness. Maybe the longest aftertaste i’ve ever experienced. Lots of barley. Not too sweet or dry or fruity... it is just right, thank you may I have another?
