"Scots Pine Ale"
Introduced by the Vikings, spruce and pine ales were very popular in the Scottish Highlands until the end of the 19th century. Many early explorers, including Captain Cook, used spruce ale during long sea voyages since it prevented scurvy and ill health. Shetland spruce ale was said to "stimulate animal instincts" and give you twins. Alba is a triple style ale brewed to a traditional Highland recipe from Scots pine and spruce shoots pickled during early spring.Pure malted barley, is boiled with the young sprigs of pine for several hours then the fresh shoots of the spruce are added for a short infusion before fermentation.
A tawny brown strong ale with spruce aroma, rich malt texture, complex wood flavour and lingering finish.
Best drunk at room temperature from a wine goblet as an after dinner digestive.

Sampled at a 2005 Christmas and Winter beer tasting at Delilah’s, Chicago, IL. 2003 vintage. Clear amber ale having a small diminishing white head. Light fruity malt aromas. Medium bodied that starts with fruity, jammy (like strawberry preserves), and light sweet malt flavors. Finishes dry with light malt aftertaste. Honestly, for beer made with spruce tips and pine branches, I wasn’t expecting much from this beer so I was pleasantly surprised by what an excellent malty beer this turned out to be. Tasty!

Best beer I’ve had in the past month. Pours a great copper amber color. Great long lasting head. Very slight piney aroma. Taste is very complex, not what you expect. Tasty brew! You have to try it.

This brew pours a tawny color w/ a medium sized, semi creamy froth. Head retention is short leaving a nice lace though. Aroma is rich w/ caramel. Medium nectar w/ soft and creamy residual effers. Semi sweet and malty upfront, this brew delivers abundant flavor. There s a defined pine sap (sproucey goosey) essence intertwined w/ cocoa malts, mildly roasted nuts, and black cherry. As she warms it explodes w/ wild berry flavors w/ an emphisis on raspberry. I really dig the creamy soupy texture on the palate. Theres a peristant bittering component that keeps this brew balanced. I expect more from the flavors just from the aroma but it’s balanced. Finish w/ a nice bittering component.

A: sprucey, piney, smooth caramel vanilla, V: clear orange, dark with little to no head. T: little sour sucker to it falling into a very pleasant spruce pine flavor.

Bottle BB4 10/06. Ok, all you whiny xenophobes need to wake up and smell the spruce! "Oh my, it’s pine, oh my gosh, it’s spruce." To all those with more progressive palates, "Cheers", this beer rocks! - 7 months after recommended consumption(seems no worse for wear, just smooth & tasty). To paraphrase a previous reviewer, "If it was good enough for the Vikings, it’s good enough for me." This is clearly an ale produced with great care and skill, and with a deep sense of respect and deference to history and heritage. We should all thank the makers of this ale for bestowing on us this unique treat, and allowing us the rare opportunity to travel back in time and partake in a cool slice of history and tradition. May all you willy-nilly, nit-picking, non-appreciators meet a rampaging, swashbuckling Viking to scare you out of your cozy little beery dreams!

From the bottle. Pours a lovely and cloudy copper with a soft head. The nose is distinctly pine and malt with some bready/yeasty notes. The flavor is true pine and very pleasantly so, if you’re a fan of that style. The mouth is light to medium body and finishes quite dryly. An altogether quaffable ale.

sweet caramel woody aroma... cloudy brown with quickly dissipating head... the woodyness really comes through in a REALLY good flavor and especially in the long finish... this was a great positive surprise
