17thfloor (1402), Chicago, Illinois, USA Jan 4, 2008 Updated: Jul 16, 2009[bottle rated 1.4.08] Black pour with medium fluffy tan head, cant ask for much more visually in this style. Aroma of dried fruit and licorice. First taste is heavy of smoked malt and coffee, followed by light vanilla. Latter on licorice/raisins come out hinting to the cask. Chocolate/fruit aftertaste. Light flavors and not in great proportion, but very complex. Body is a little oily yet thin, carbonation is big bubbles but not many of them.

Very tasty, creamy, oily, chocolate, smooth, vanilla, super spicy, coffee, roast, bitter, very herbal. Not sure what I’m talking about in my last rating. A really nice beer. almosi (279), Viña del Mar, Chile Jan 1, 2008 Has a brown, very dark color, and a very minimal and rapid head. The aroma is deep, good, is like to be in forest of pines. The flavor is very complex, there is berries and sweet caramel, also something of sweet malt. There is bitter chocolate, and spices a with a slight and piquant aftertaste. A very good beer. Lament that is a summer, since with a bit more of cold would have been excellent. KM (218), Tromsø, Norway Dec 29, 2007 Bottle. Pale brown fine head. Almost totally black. A kind of sweet aroma. A strong dark fruitiness and roasted barley. A bit special. Not far from a good norwegian christmas beer. Strong flavour, heavy roasted maltiness. Medium sweet. A tad fruity too. Medium bitter finish. Pleasant carbonation. I like this. (Tromsø, 06.11.07) Heathen (723), Riverside, New Jersey, USA Dec 28, 2007 THOUGHTS; I had a skunked variety pack of these ales about a year ago so I didn’t rate any of them then. This one is extremely better than before. The skunked one didn’t have any of the roasted, chocolate or coffee notes. It’s sort of like a Scottish version of a porter. This was the only one of the four-pack that I would drink on a regular basis. Also it was the one that improved the most from the skunked version. Would like to try this one again. Very nice.
TECHNICAL: Bottle. Poured a dark brown that was black in the glass with an average-sized, off-white to light tan head that mostly diminished. The flavor was moderate roasted malt, milk chocolate and mild coffee along with herb hops and a light aroma of dark fruits like blackberry I guess that was the elderberry. The initial flavor was lightly sweet, while the finish was heavily sweet, lightly acidic and sour with an average duration. The flavor was mostly roasted mat, chocolate and coffee with a little fruitiness too. Sort of like chocolate cherry cordials. The medium body was creamy with lightly fizzy carbonation and a lightly astringent, alcoholic and watery finish. popephred (193), Plainfield, Illinois, USA Dec 25, 2007 Poured into a pint glass, producing a black body with a medium tannish-brown head. Aroma was of a dark roasted chocolate, with slight berry notes. Medium to strong bitterness throughout the tasting with a roasted coffee palate with an earthy dirt taste at the end. ShawnMalloy (119), Auburn, Massachusetts, USA Dec 23, 2007 Pours a thick black. Aroma of Malt and berries. Taste is very dry at first and kicks in with a nice berry finish. thegreenrooster (1810), St.louis, Missouri, USA Dec 14, 2007 Pour is a black with a tan head. Aroma is friuty and cocoa. Flavor is much of the same some fruit but more of a chocolate aspect. Decent beer with nothing to say bad about it, it just did not do anything for me in the way of a stout or fruit beer. JohnBarleycorn (390), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Dec 11, 2007 Bottle. Deep brown/black appearance with thin medium-brown head. Chocolate dominates the aroma and flavour, with mild berry fruit peeking its way through. Like a drinkable fruit-filled boxed chocolate. Very appetizing, with good depth and evident high-quality ingredients. A remarkable fruit-accented beer.
