Roasted, malty taste with chocolate, coffee, liquorice, notes of citrus and elderberries. Slightly tarry. Very complex beer with the elderberries lingering nicely in the background. DrBayern (1135), Morehead City, North Carolina, USA Aug 27, 2007 Bottle. Deep, nearly opaque, mahogany pour that produces a healthy brown head that slowly subsides leaving a spotty lace. I’m not sure what elderberries smell like, but that must be the origin of the strong fruit aroma. Additionally, I detect some treacle, and some pronounced herbal notes. Very interesting aroma overall, unlike anything else I’ve experienced. A quite smooth medium body is paired with low carbonation and a lasting chewiness. Neutral balance with a softly dry finish. I didn’t think I would care much for this, but it surprised me. Unusual, yet drinkable, and a pleasant departure from the usual fare. flowerysong (25), USA Aug 23, 2007 Appearance: Another cola-brown beer with a brown foamy head.
Smell: Soft berry fruitiness and hints of roasted malt.
Taste: Nicely integrated dark berry taste with malt and charred coffee in the background. Some soft tannins contribute to an astringent finish.
Mouthfeel: Medium-full and creamy.
Drinkability: Very drinkable; while the berry flavour is noticeable, it’s not overpowering and the base beer is quite well done.
tytoanderso (1382), St. Louis Park, Minnesota, USA Aug 21, 2007 Bottle. Very attractive pour: almost black with a big, creamy khaki head. Nose of malt, pine, mine, grass and a hint of clovelike spice. Odd flavor profile: fairly malty with a hint of dried fruit and some steamed vegetables (in a good way). Fairly rich on the palate with good carbonation. Finishes herbal and dry. Unique. Beershine (2678), Hue, Vietnam Aug 20, 2007 Another unique beer from a special brewery. This one is malty, vinous in many ways. Not my favorite Heather Ale but worth drinking anyway. Funknmilla (577), Phoenixville, Pennsylvania, USA Aug 18, 2007 Dark brown, almost reminds me of a porter or stout on the pour, little foam ...toffee + molasses on the nose...has a coffee mocha thing going on....well balanced flavor with malts added to just the right sips...I smell a sort of fruit on the sniff, but I’m not real familiar with elderberries, so I guess thats whats going on in my nostrils...this is available to me only during x-mas time in the gift pack at my local joint
