Aggie80 (708), Michigan, USA Jul 19, 2006 Dark pour with a long lasting tan head and good lacing. Aroma of hops, coffee and berry. Good touch of bitterness with the strong chocolate/coffee flavors. Nice hoppy aftertaste without going too far. Great Stuff! winegarner (220), san diego, California, USA Jun 26, 2006 Poured a dark black with a thick, almost nitrogen poured, tan head. Aroma has lots of chocolate and fruit that seems like a mix between blackberries and red wine grapes. Flavor is very rich and memorable, a smooth bittersweet chocolate blended with what I asume is eldeberries, though my inexperience with them leads me to descibe as blackberries and red wine grapes. That fruit flavor is rather subtle, and sneaks up behind the creamy chocolate flavor. Mouthfeel is very full bodied but the beer is relatively dry. I could drink quite a lot of these. biznizness (930), Mooresville, North Carolina, USA Jun 21, 2006 Had no idea what to expect but, guess, what, this beer rocked. Deep roasty, caramel flavor with an awesome head on the pour. I still don’t know what an Elderberry is, but apparently they make good beers. bluevegie (2169), Perth, Australia Jun 21, 2006 Thank god for some dark beers, liquorice, almost full body. Can’t find the Elderberry but that didn’t matter. Lovely, didn’t notice the alcohoI but it hits you later. Dogess (1), Littleton, Colorado, USA does not count Jun 16, 2006 A dark brown with an almost maroon tinge. A medium-bodied tan head. Aroma of tobacco and anise. This tastes like the gluwein served at German Christmas markets. Very herby in both aroma and taste. molassesfan (201), Raleigh, North Carolina, USA Jun 11, 2006 Pours black with a small tan head. Aroma of burned malt with elderberry and some tobacco undertones. Malty peaty flavor with elderberries fairly well pronounced. Dry bitter finish with some alcohol presence. Not bad but could show more presence of...elderberries. hammenlind (738), Sundbyberg, Sweden Jun 11, 2006 Dark mahogany, bubbly tan head. Tar, somewhat burnt aroma with hints of tobacco and elder. Decent bitterness.
Flavour is mostly roasted. Some notes of coffee. eaglefan538 (2355), Wilmington, Delaware, USA Jun 11, 2006 These novelty Heather Ales were purchased strictly for that reason alone: novelty. And, well, good thing I didn’t have high expectations, although this one is better than that Elderberry Wheat Ale I just had. Poured dark brown color with reddish edges. Looked like typical Scottish ale with a small head and decent bubbly lacing. The aroma was of peat and smoke with a fruity sweetness, although I didn’t get any specific berry smells. Flavor was of roasted malts with some typical Scottish ale smoekey flavors. Finished with a sweetness that had a touch of I guess berries. Hard to call this a fruit beer, best classified as a Scottish ale with a touch of a berry fruit finish, but the smoke and roasted malts are most prominent. Mouthfeel was moderate for the style, thick overall.
