DavidP (1743), Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA Jun 19, 2005 Bottle best before April ’06. Very dark brown body with a frothy yet thin off-white head. Dry bready brown malt arom with a lively red berry note. Lightly roasted caramel malt with a dry wheaty yeastiness. The fruit isn’t terribly evident, it plays along with the nondescript hoppy bitterness. The gin creeps out in the finish along with a dry huskiness. This stuff has sort of a dead mouthfeel and flavor, it might be good to drink with some food but by itself it doesn’t do well. Terminus (1955), Las Cruces, New Mexico, USA Jun 11, 2005 Aroma is subtle malt based. Looks dark, almost black, with very little carbination. This beer is very strong on the barley and the aftertaste is malt and plant tasting. Unique flavor that needs a few sips to get the idea of this one. ThomasE (5179), Copenhagen, Denmark Jun 2, 2005 Dark brown colour with a light brown head. Roasted malty aroma with some chocolate sweetness. Roasted malty flavor with hints of some fruit and chocolate. Emil (6075), Copenhagen, Denmark May 30, 2005 Bottle. Black colour with a dissapering baige head. Sweet roasted malty chocolat aroma and taste. Medium body and a smooth finish. beerhugger (541), Oshawa, Ontario, Canada May 29, 2005 Wow - I don’t know what Elderberries smell like, but this beer was chocolate first and then dark fruits second. It first materializes as a rich, creamy stout wannabee, but of course the conflict that is raging between berries and roasty chocolate maltiness boils forth and dispels any notion that it is walking in a stout’s footsteps. It’s a little less creamy than I would like considering its initial appearance, but still, thin mouthfeel aside, offers enough variety of flavour to hold its appeal. Perhaps a touch astringent in the long finish, with a slightly sour tinge which isn’t entirely fitting or welcomed. This bottle was marked as being Best Before august of 2004, yet ironically it is better than the one I had a while back that was within its Best Before parameters - perhaps it benefits from some overaging? Solidly enjoyable. jbrus (4835), Delft, Netherlands May 29, 2005 Bottled. Nice blackcurrant aroma, not very special but nice. But the looks! Wow! Pours very thick, black color, brown creamy head, very nice lace. Flavor also very nice, light sweet, blackcurrant, lots of chocolat, getting more and more bitter in the finish with a nice fruitiness in the back. Thick and smooth feeling. joergen (8430), Frederiksberg, Denmark May 24, 2005 Bottled at DBF 2005.
Black coloured with a medium sized head that disappears fast.
Aroma of chocolate with roasted notes.
Low carbonation.
The flavour is a bit watery with dominated by chocolate and roasted notes and notes of berries. JK (2946), Richfield, Minnesota, USA May 21, 2005 Updated: Mar 30, 2007Very disappointing. Black, no head. Flavor of blood and metal. No fruit flavor or aroma at all, but also no bitterness. Like a light schwartz beer.
