unclebleen (620), California, USA Jan 10, 2005 pours really dark with a small almost tan head. nice lacing from the small but hanging around head. aroma is plum, tea leaves, chocolate, mixed with a rich roasted like note. flavor is dried dark fruit with an interesting juice-extract note. I’ve actually tasted pure elderberry juice extract and I can definetely taste the same flavors in this. Body is like a porter, slightly, but appropriately thin. I think this is pretty interesting. DrnkMcDermott (1832), Downers Grove, Illinois, USA Jan 10, 2005 Bottled. Thin head at pour. Dark and astringent from patent malts. Finish is very dry, making it characteristic of an elderberry wine than a fruit beer. Interesting, but just okay. beerbuzzmontreal (2909), Montreal, Quebec, Canada Jan 4, 2005 Deep black color with a medium, diminishing light brown head. Weak aroma of berries and biscuity malt. Flavor of berries and biscuity malt. Light body. Nothing special. CampbellWilson (533), Scotland Jan 1, 2005 Bottle from Green Welly Stop, Tyndrum. Aroma of roast malt, chocolate, coffee, slight fruitiness, not obviously elderberry. Medium mouthfeel. Hints of peat and spice. Good acidity. Unusual (as usual) beer from the Williams boys. Malakin (465), Victoria, British Columbia, Canada Jan 1, 2005 Very dark, earthy coffee aroma with a tan head. Full toffee flavours and not too sweet, bit of berryess in there but the mouthfeel is a bit flat. Macbeerboy (2), Whitby, Ontario, Canada does not count Dec 23, 2004 St-Ambroise Oatmeal Stout was my favourite beer until I tired this one. Oh God this is good stuff. It is surprisingly light and the flavour is rich. It’s too bad it is only around for the Christmas season at the LCBO. It’s also too bad that it is so expensive. It comes with 3 other traditional ales at a little over $13.00. Still it is worth it. Ungstrup (14754), Frederiksberg, Denmark Dec 16, 2004 A pitch black beer with a fine brown head. The aroma is of sweet caramel. The flavor is sweet and roasted combined with spices and berries. More special than good. Kinz (2179), Glen Allen, Virginia, USA Dec 12, 2004 Pours black, brown at edges, very little head. Aroma is chocolate with muted dark fruits. Dark chocolate malts dominate the flavor. A faint currant-like flavor is in the distant background. Medium body. Very porter-like. Don’t think I would have picked up on the berry flavors if I hadn’t been actively looking for them, probably would have attributed them to the yeast. Interesting. I’m a sucker for these historical reproduction beers.
