weaselkenievil (738), Cheshire, England Jan 22, 2009 Pretty much black as night with a tan head. Odd, will have to try again as I’m not sure whether I liked it or not. Elderberry and some other fruit or fruits perhaps, I don’t each much fruit. Got roastyness to it, garlic perhaps? Strange and certainly not unpleasant. Like an energy ale. Bizarre. stevebail (17), Guelph, Ontario, Canada Jan 6, 2009 Quite delicious. both sweet and bitter with flavours of berries and coffee. Aftertaste of dark roast coffee lingers. DruncanVeasey (2694), The Penguin’s Arms, Europe, Warwickshire, England Jan 6, 2009 Tan piled on pitch. Persistent lacing with faint legs. Handsome roasty ale wafting with charred barley, black coffee and rich chewy tannin-laden fruit. Mouth oaty slick and burnt with big roasted malt, hints of brine, oak, prune and lingering espresso and smoke. At heart just a really solid charred porter/stout, with added fruity interest. Nothing like the novelty it could have been. Really enjoyed this. Marthinus (118), Denmark Jan 4, 2009 brown head, with clear taste of elderberry, and at the same time dark fruity. HonkeyBra (1279), Lemont, Illinois, USA Jan 3, 2009 I don’t know what an elderberry is. However, for a dark beer, with fruit, this is pretty nice. Not something I’d buy, but it’s by no means a drain pour. Cool, funky, and different. fizzban (27), whitehouse, New Jersey, USA Dec 27, 2008 This was an awsome beer. totaly differnt, its the only dark beer i know of that also has fruit to it. A little odd a first but i warmed up to it fast. Starts nice and malty, then you get eddelberry. slight hints of choclolate and carmel. TearsforBeers (171), Ohio, USA Dec 27, 2008 Pours a nice black that is clear and amber around the edges with a bit of off white head.
Aroma is sweet, malts, elderberry
The taste is very nice, not overwhelming, starts malty sweet with a bit of fruit acidity, moves into elderberry flavor, and finishes with roast at the back of the tongue.
Palate is moderate, not thin or thick.
I am having good luck with these heather beers! cyrenaica (435), Milton, Ontario, Canada Dec 24, 2008 330ml bottle
6.5% ABV
I tried this beer on December 14, 2008 after purchasing a 4 pack of "Historic Scottish Ales" from one of my local LCBO outets. The beer poured an opaque blackish-brown with a very thin head. The aroma is dark roasted malt, some dark fruit, and a little earthiness. The mouthfeel is mefium bodied, with medium carbonation. The flavour is roasted malt, dark fruit, some coffee/chocolate hints, and a dryish finish.
