COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Bottled. A cask version at 5.8% is produced in October and November.
"Elderberry Black Ale"
Introduced to Scotland by Welsh druids in the 9th Century, elderberry black ale was part of the Celtic Autumn festivals when the "elders" would make this strong ale and pass the drink round the people of the village. The recipe was taken from a 16th Century record of domestic drinking in the Scottish Highlands. Elderberries were used for many natural remedies to cure sciatica, other forms of neuralgia, influenza and rhumatism as they contain tannins and fruit oils.
Ebulum is made from roasted oats, barley and wheat boiled with herbs then fermented with ripe elderberries.
A rich black ale with fruit aroma, silky soft texture, soft roasted flavour and gentle finish.
Recommended with stewed and baked foods.
Drink lightly chilled from a straight glass.

Slightly sweet, light bodied, not too flavorful. It is another not so memorable offering from this line of beers.

Bottle at home. Black pour with a quickly dissipating tan head. Aroma of bready yeast, red grapes, roasted malts and chocolate. Flavor is sweet and roasted with some nice fruity tones and a decent bitter finish with some burnt malts. Nice spectrum, good balance. Very nice brew.

Bottle 330ml. Exceptional. Aromas of plum, chocolate, and a hint of pine. Taste is sweet, with bitter bites, and very long length. Palate is almost creamy, with a medium-to-full body. Dark brown, with a head that doesn’t last.

poisoneddwarf (980) - Rathdrum, Idaho, USA - DEC 26, 2010
11.2 oz bottle into dimpled mug. Bought the Historical Ales of Scotland gift pack at a convenience store in Coeur d’ Alene, Idaho at a bargain (Fairway for those who know the area). Pours almost opaque black with reddish tints when held up to the light. Has a medium tan soapy head that collapses fairly quick, leaving a constant ring and blanket of foam. Chocolate chip cookies, mocha, smoke and overripe fruit are apparent in the nose. Tastes like a fruity porter. The fruit could be a bit more prounounced. Mostly sweet with a touch of sour. Roasted flavor. Medium-high carbonation and medium-bodied. Good stuff.
