2 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 1/5 OVERALL 7/20
I have to begin with the point that I had no expectations for this beer. It’s not something that I’ve been eyeing at the beer store, or anything similar for that matter. My roommate brought some home and thought we should check it out. I was delighted with the concept of a traditional ale that uses all of the elements that a brew would have had back in the day, but I was not delighted with this beer. It poured a dark black with what appeared to be a reddish hue in the light, no head. It had the aroma of malt and grapes, but when it came to flavor it lacked in both of those departments. For that matter, it sort of lacked in all flavor. It had a weak, light mouthfeel and not much flavor aside from the tannin one would get from a glass of red wine...I can’t say I am impressed. It was alright, but not amazing.

4.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20
Bottle from GingRealAleTrail (Bought from The Curious Hop)
Pours Dark Brown with single finger tan head-goes away quickly. Aroma of Dark Fruits, Burnt Malts. Initial taste of Dark Fruits, then touch of Elderberry-sweet then bitter, then dark chocolate, burnt malts, toffee, caramel, coffee and then a lightly smoky finish, with a wee kick from the ABV. Very nice!

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20
0,33 bottle. Pours dark brown colour with thin light brown head that is mostly diminishing. Hazy liquid, soft carbonation, medium body, oily or creamy texture.
Aroma is burnt malt, toffee, a little bit of black currant (or is this elderberry?), some floral.
Initial taste is light sweet and light bitter, some roastness is present, coffee, prunes and currant notes. Aftertaste overall smooth and short. Little bitter, dark chocolate, burnt bread.

2.6 AROMA 3/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 9/20
Aroma: Medium toasty, melanoidin, licorice
Appearance: Body: Dark brown, opaque. Head: Thin, light brown, low retention.
Flavour: Malt: Licorice, Medium bitterness. Medium sweetness. Light alcohol. Medium Medium dry, tart finish with lingering licorice.
Mouthfeel: Medium-full body, medium carbonation.
Overall: I can’t pick up any elderberries (but I have no idea what elderberries smell/taste like). The base recipe is good, but I expected more elderberries.

3.1 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle. Black colour, beige head that does not stay long, good lacing. Nose is quite intensive dark chocolate, with a something floral. Mouth is surprisingly smooth, a floral accent dominates and roasted malt is just the background; also some liquorice. Light sweetness, light bitterness. Soft carbonation, the beer feels smooth. Somewhat reminds me of Bracia, but of course this one isn’t so intensive in taste. Overall, quite drinkable, quite interesting, but I don’t think I’ll return to it.

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20
Does not taste like elderberry, but more like good black smoky black ale. Hints of coffee, smells wonderfully cozy of oil, prunes, rock candy and chocolate. My judgement skill and alcohol tolerance is descending as I taste this - whereas I recognize the excellent experience of how this is, I don’t know how to express it. Smoke is a main theme, viscosity is another.

Sample bottle. Actually pretty good. The label doesn’t do much for this which is a shame in regards to selling it but the beer inside is good. Sort of comes across like a slightly tarty dark lager. Definitely a nice ripe berry presence which adds something. Tasty beer
