COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Bottle: Filtered
Brewed in Scotland since 2000 B.C. heather ale is probably the oldest style of ale still produced in the world. From an ancient Gaelic recipe for "leann fraoich" (heather ale) it has been revived and reintroduced to the Scottish culture.
Into the boiling bree of malted barley, sweet gale and flowering heather are added, then after cooling slightly the hot ale is poured into a vat of fresh heather flowers where it infuses for an hour before being fermented.
A light amber ale with floral peaty aroma, full malt charachter, a spicy herbal flavour and dry wine like finish.
Recommended with rich and Spicy foods.
Drink slightly chilled from a fluted glass.

Clear, golden. Killer head. Very unassertive nose. Some sweetness and maybe a little of the floral aspect mentioned. Smooth, soft body, light floral and malty notes, slightly bitter. Not bad by any means.

UPDATED: JUL 27, 2003 Re-rate:strange, this is nothing how i remember it. I previously gave it 3.8, but i had i on cask at the Kent Beer Festival, and it tasted like a completly different beer, thin and flowery, with a very strange flavour (can't pick it) which i guess is from the heather, strange.

Delicate mild grassy and mineral aromas/flavors hauntingly akin to Coors. Dry, soft bitter flavors stretch into the finish. Enjoyable.

I saw all of the good comments and had to add my own. It smelled great, it looked great, it tasted like a flower. That’s not a compliment. The after-taste just about killed me. I hated this beer. Maybe it’s heather beers in general. It’s the only one I’ve ever had.

Unique floral aroma and flavor. Personally, i think i like the aroma better than the taste. Overall, a very different but pretty good beer.

Interesting. Slightly cloudy golden color, like a hefeweizen. The aroma isn’t all that floral to me, but there is a distinctly floral aftertaste. The overall flavor is far more like a lager than an ale. The wierdest thing about it is that I, normally a hop fiend, am enjoying it a lot.

I loved the smell. It had a unique earth taste that i really enjoyed. I just wish it was cheaper.

Nice beer to have with a light dinner. I have never eaten heather before, but I guess that is the ’earthy’ flavor everyone describes. Very pleasant brew.

On 9/10/01, I rated this as a ’boring’ 1.9. I tried it again from the bottle and I am still unimpressed. It’s not bad but I didn’t think it had any strong flavor. Just a typical ordinary beer. Reading the reviews makes me wonder if I had the same beer (I did). I’ve had it twice, and was unimpressed both times, so there won’t be a 3rd time.
