The Brotherhood have been guardians of the ancient Gaelic recipe for "leann fraoich" (heather ale) since 1988 and are proud to be the only brewery still producing this unique style of beer and distributing it world wide. A light amber ale with floral peaty aroma, full malt character, and a spicy herbal finish - This beer allows you to literally pour 4000 years of Scottish history into a glass.
Into the boiling bree of malted barley, sweet gale and flowering heather are added, then after cooling slightly the hot ale is poured into a vat of fresh heather flowers where it infuses for an hour before being fermented.

Faint aroma but some heather and caramel can be noticed. Golden clear with white head. Sweet milky and smooth with heather gicing noticable contribution to the taste.

A clear light orange body with a scimpy white head. Nose has herbal minty notes with some underlying malt characters. Taste is sweet with a minty herbal aftertaste. Carbonation and palate are medium. Overall quite nice and drinkable.

Pours a clear golden color and littered with the largest amount of vegetable manner I’ve ever seen floating in a beer. Oaky vanilla on the nose with some grassy and citrusy hop noted earlier after the pour. Creamy mouthfeel with some carbonation on the rear of the palate. Sweet corn flavor, with a touch more of a sign of that oaky vanilla noted in the nose.

Pours a medium golden color with a finger of foam. Nose is light floral malt and some honey. Palate follows with a soft palate not a whole lot going on. Drinkable but uninteresting with a simple beer flavor. Grain, light faint bitterness and lingering floral grass.

Bottle from the LCBO. Very pale cloudy yellow with a small white head. Nose is quite floral with some honey and grass as well as vanilla. Moderately sweet throughout with very light spice in the finish. Mouth is light and thin with soft carbonation. Nice and refreshing even if a little watery.

Appearance with golden color, slightly cloudy liquid and very little head. Floral aroma with the peculiarity of Heather. Flavor with vegetable flavor, plant, floral, etc. Very little carbonated, surprising, but in the end I consider a good beer.

It has a golden honey colored body with a lightly hazy appearance. There is not much of head, just a small light foamy covering that fades out to nothing quickly. There is no lacing to mention at all. The aroma has an interesting full floral bouquet with some honey like sweetness, some light grain notes and fresh salty sea air. There is an odd dry grain with a hint of mineral flavor like sea air and a solid floral character throughout. Underneath there are some sweeter malt, honey and buttery notes that mix with the floral heather notes. The floral notes build up to the finish and add a pleasant bitterness and dryness to it. The palate is slick and smooth with light carbonation and a light to medium body.

The aroma was light vanilla, with mild hay. I loved the appearance, nice light orange/yellow color and mine had lots of apparently small heather flower pieces suspended in the beer. Tasted lightly sweet with hay and mild spice. Smooth and full bodied on the palate. Overall a great and different beer I would definitely recommend to a friend.

The aroma is very faint; a little bit of honey, a little bit of peach, probably some herbs. Pours yellowish orange with a minute head. The taste is slightly sweet, even slightier bitter, spicy. Body halfway between low and medium, almost flat, finish sweet and a tad tart. Nothing special; much as I’m pleased I got a chance to taste such an ancient recipe, I’m happy we also have different ones these days.
