Gooseberry Wheat Ale
From the Gaelic "Groseid". Since at least the 16th century Scots monks and alewives brewed indigenous drinks from cereals, wild herbs and ripe fruits. Tibbie Shiels green Grozet was immortalised by such Scots literati as Sir Walter Scott, Jas Hogg. (The Ettrick shepherd) and Robert Burns whoconsidered it a most convivial drink.
Brewed with lager malt, wheat, bog myrtle, hops and meadowsweet then secondary fermented with ripe Scottish gooseberries.
A pale golden beer, with a refreshing fruit aroma, clean palate, fruity wheat flavour and crisp finish. Recommended with, light foods, pastas and salads.
Drink well chilled in a tall glass.

Pours bubbly clear yellow with little head. Aroma is subtle, to put it politely. Grains, touch of an unusual fruitiness. Taste is much more bold - there’s a very cereal-heavy, quite sweet malty backbone. There’s an unusual fruity, berry-ish lingering finish - that’s the gooseberry I assume. Quite original, quite pleasant.

Bottle from Sainsbury’s Nairn.
Amber, clear, thin frothy white head, minimal lacing.
Aroma of light malts, slight grain, bit of spicy and citrus hop, some herbal / floral notes.
Taste of citrus hops, some light grain malts, citrus fruits..sour lime, hint of herbs.
Palate - soft carb, thin body, plain finish - light bitter with some sour fruit.
Overall - A sort of flavoured lager. A bit dull to be honest. Not much going on here.

From a 330ml bottle on 29/10/2011. Pours a cloudy pale golden with almost no head. Has a very slight grassy, bready, fruity aroma. The flavour is primarily of sweet fruit (berries), with just a touch of spiciness. Finishes with a modest bitterness. This is unusual and moderately interesting, but not very beer like. I doubt I’ll have another.

50cl bottle. Thin white head. Clear golden pour. Very drinkable but could do with more flavour (although I do have a cold)

Bottle at home in NH, shared with siblings. Pours slightly hazy with bits of sediment. Sweet berry character with medium bitterness, some wood. Sweet flavor. Medium bodied with fine carbonation. Almost some ginger notes, and a bit of faint earth in the finish. Alright.

Brought over for a tasting by my cousin, kevinsenn. no head to speak of. just about no aroma either... Not offensive, just not there. The malt flavor is just about nonexistent, but the gooseberries and spice come through nicely. It’s not bad, not special. ...It’s GOOD, but it’s not really what I think of when I’m thinking of beer. I guess that’s the idea, though - an ancient Scottish beer, pre-hops.

Pours pale yellow and cloudy. Not much aroma to speak of. Almost no malt flavour, but plenty of delicate spice. Not bad, but not what you want if you want a beer.
