Gooseberry Wheat Ale
From the Gaelic "Groseid". Since at least the 16th century Scots monks and alewives brewed indigenous drinks from cereals, wild herbs and ripe fruits. Tibbie Shiels green Grozet was immortalised by such Scots literati as Sir Walter Scott, Jas Hogg. (The Ettrick shepherd) and Robert Burns whoconsidered it a most convivial drink.
Brewed with lager malt, wheat, bog myrtle, hops and meadowsweet then secondary fermented with ripe Scottish gooseberries.
A pale golden beer, with a refreshing fruit aroma, clean palate, fruity wheat flavour and crisp finish. Recommended with, light foods, pastas and salads.
Drink well chilled in a tall glass.

I was less than impressed with this beer. The aroma was a little sour and overall not appealing and first sip reminded me vaguely of water (maybe because of it’s lack of taste?) The second sip got better as did the following sips as I started to pick up more of the gooseberry flavor. Very little malt presence (says it’s a wheat ale on the label)and the berry flavor dominates the flavor profile. After I had hit the halfway point, this beer becaem harder and harder to drink. Maybe I’m just not that big of a fan of gooseberries. Maybe I just don’t like kool-aid mixed with my beer.

Spicy and fruity nose. Peach shade, fluffy head. Distinctive first taste, like liqueur or a milder brandy. Hints of pesto? Extremely bitter after taste. (Yum) Loads of carbonation, quite complex, heavy in the mouth, seems stronger than 5% alcohol. Terrific, Gooseberries rule!

Hazy golden color with a milk colored head. Even the history behind this one doesn’t make it any better. Perfumy and spritzy. Sweet and tart finish. Just did not really like this one.

Slightly hazy with a very small head. Smeels very sweet, which I guess is the gooseberries coming through. I have no idea what gooseberries are. A decent mouthfeel, more sweetness, some sourness/bitterness, very different. I haven’t had any of the heather ales before so I’m not too sure what to think of this until I try the others. Refreshing, but nothing special.

Probably the blandest of all the Heather Ales. There are hints of gooseberry and sour notes, but nothing that dominates, or even takes the lead. Very watery palate with only the slightest bitterness at the end. I’m a big fan of Heather Ales but this is the one I like least.

May be made uniquely, but it still comes off tasting like flavored wheat beer. Not horrible, just not very special

Bit bitter, but there aren’t any hops, so I don’t know where that’s coming from. Seems all Heather ales have no hops. Odd. Bad taste with aroma of berries.

Golden coloured. Fruity smell. Smooth and sweetish.

Different, but overall I did not like it that much. Does not taste much like wheat or any type of berry, but I have no idea what bog myrtle tastes like. I have tried others from the historic ales of Scotland series and they were better.

Misty amber ale. Nice fruit aroma, delicate. Balanced taste, some malt and hop, herbal. The palate too is not bad, but also not outstanding.
