So we had a sampler pack of Heather Ales in a cooler of other beers, stuck in faintly icy water that succesfully delableled many of the bottles. So I actually had this without realizing what it was until we got further into the cooler and the result is that I tasted a good, strong, smoky porterish brew without thought of saltwater or seaweed. The smoke is sharp enough to acutely bring into balance a heady malt that would tip overly rich otherwise. Good stuff and the best Heather Ale, IMO.

This was a pretty decent beer, and it actually tastes a bit like seaweed at first. Overall a decent beer with a very interesting flavor.

This was a pretty decent tasting beer - but very unremarkable considering it is called Seaweed Ale - I mean I was at least expecting a hint of green or some little chunks of kelp or something to make it as gross as it sounds!

I was really nervous about trying this one. I don’t really know what seaweed tastes like, but it doesn’t appear to be a main ingredient in this brew. Dark amber color with a thick beige head. Lightly malty/roasted aroma. Malt very present in the flavor as well, with a little chocolate here and there. As far as novelty beers go this one is pretty solid, but on the grand scale of things it isn’t really breaking any new ground.
3.6 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 rauchbier (3205) - Isle Of Beer, Lincolnshire, ENGLAND - AUG 1, 2002
Deep red black colour, good beige rocky head with nice level of condition. Chocolate aromas, body is mainly chocolate with a sweet coffee hint but too thin bodied to make it a stout, more choc and roast coffee in the finish. Like a strong version of a midlands mild.
2.4 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 10/20 tbookman (618) - Ephrata, Pennsylvania, USA - AUG 1, 2002
A thin porter with a decent flavor - very slightly smoky. Pretty weak overall - nothing special. Maybe my bottle was old...
4.4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 19/20 Trappist (284) - Knoxville, Tennessee, USA - JUL 31, 2002
I have to agree with Suttree. This beer is very good, and close to being a porter. It has coffee undertones and a great bitter finish, that I like in stouts and in porters.

If you had this in a blind tasting, I don’t think anyone would say ’hey! There’s seaweed in my beer!’ You really can’t taste it. It is, however a pretty good porter, maybe a touch lighter bodied.
3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20 TAR (2236) - Lafayette, Colorado, USA - JUL 21, 2002
Butter, caramel, cabbage?, root, bacon, high level of roastiness, coffee, and subtle fruitiness. Dense, creamy foam atop a brown murky liquid. Thin palate, medium-full carbonation, acidic, and dry. Flavors are fruit and roasty, with an underlying shade of coffee. Leans toward a Rauchbier-like finish with spicy smoke and slight astringency. Other than the interesting cabbage note in the aroma the addition of seaweed is unapparent. This is, perhaps, just a marketing ploy. A well-made porter it is.

Much more impressive than the heather ale. Behind that clean malty aroma you can almost smell the salty sea air. Flavor is a stark contrast with its chocolaty, coffee roastedness, but a lightness that invites quaffing. There is a little saltiness lingering ih the aftertaste. Pretty impressive and not unimaginative
