"Seaweed Ale"
Prior to the 1850's there were many Scottish coastal alehouses which brewed their own ales, these ales were made from local malted barley which was grown on fields fertilised with seaweed. This environment gave the barley a very specific flavour which we have recreated by the inclusion of fresh seaweed in the mash tun. In addition to the seaweed (bladder rack) harvested on the Argyll coast we have used only organically grown malt - the darker malts roasted by ourselves.
Kelpie is a rich chocolate ale which has an aroma of fresh seabreeze and a distinctive malty texture.
Drink lightly chilled in a wine glass.

330mL bottle. Mmm, Seaweed Ale. Very dark, black\brown color, thin white head. Aroma of roasted grains. Smell has a good amount of chocolate malts and then there is a hint of salt air / crab legs. Watered down flavor. A touch of chocolate. Oily texture, salty finish. Very odd. Definite taste of a salted essence, I suppose it is fresh seaweed. Huh... (3325) May the 4th be with you. MCA, R.I.P.

50 cl bottle @ home, BBE 05/2013
Aroma feels like Oyster Stout – somewhat stale with roasted malt, cocoa and sourness. Also hints of berries. Flavour has roasted malt, some toffee typical to English Ales and hints of metal. Cocoa in the dry finish. A bit watery, but decent anyway.

I bought this in a 4 pack of Ancient Scottish Ales made from recipes before the popularity of hops. I don’t like "hoppy" beers, so this should right up my alley. I tried 3 of the 4 and was down to this one. A seaweed beer - eh? I’m not going to like this. First sip.... mmmmm... this is good. A little bit low on the alcohol side (at least for the Scottish ales that I typically drink), but this is an excellent "lighter" beer. It’s dark in color, full in flavor, but no heaviness.

Bottle at local bar. Black color, beige head. Liquorice, hint of coffee and burnt finish. Good brew, but can't identify much seaweed in taste.

Very dark ruby red pour, no head. Aroma is faint. Kinda smells like crab legs, must be the seaweed. Tastes better than it smells but the after taste is a little weird. Roasted malt and even chocolate up front but then the seaweed flavor takes over. It’s not overly powerful but its just not very tasty. Very weird. It tastes kinda like a thin stout with a seaweed finish. Interesting but I probably won’t drink it again.

50 cl bottle. BBE 05/2013.
Pours deep dark ruby red, almost black color with a large, foamy head. Aroma of light chocolate, distant honey notes, herbs, mild spices and malts. Flavor of mild dried dark fruits, light dry chocolate notes, hints of honey, some spices and malts. Light dark berry notes on the aftertaste. Dry and malty palate, a bit watery though. Decent.

330ml bottle pours a dark brown color with a 2 finger light tan head that settles down to leave some thin spotty lacing on the glass. Aroma is chocolate and smoke with hint of seaweed. Taste is malty sweet with chocolate and smoke with a mild hop bitterness. Medium bodied with some decent carbonation. An interesting ale that tastes kinda like a smokey porter. Quite enjoyable.
