Commercial Description:

"Seaweed Ale"
Prior to the 1850's there were many Scottish coastal alehouses which brewed their own ales, these ales were made from local malted barley which was grown on fields fertilised with seaweed. This environment gave the barley a very specific flavour which we have recreated by the inclusion of fresh seaweed in the mash tun. In addition to the seaweed (bladder rack) harvested on the Argyll coast we have used only organically grown malt - the darker malts roasted by ourselves.
Kelpie is a rich chocolate ale which has an aroma of fresh seabreeze and a distinctive malty texture.
Drink lightly chilled in a wine glass.

Very dark brown pour with thin tan head. Aroma of chocolate roasted malt. Taste has more roasted malt, chocolate, and mildly bitter chocolate. To be honest I can’t taste any of the seaweed except perhaps in some saltiness in the finish. Good carbonation but slightly watery mouthfeel on the finish.

Wow, I had this beer and can’t believe I forgot to rate it. My thoughts were that this was more of a normal stout, nothing too exciting other than the enticement that there is seaweed in the beer which is something different. There really isn’t anything odd about the beer other than I found there to be a fairly strong medicinal flavor, which was unpleasant. Not extremely great, nothing terribly appealing about this beer, it was only semi-drikable to me.

Bottle from Centra, Oslo. Dark ruby, not very strong aroma. MAlt, tar, quite fruity. Coffe, boiled sweets. I don’t know if I can distinguish any seaweed here, but it is a nice beer nevertheless.

This is an interesting and a pleasant surprise. Dark, dark pour. Tan head. Aroma is a bit smoky, chocolate, nuts, and nice. Flavor is smoky, sweet-tart, with some slight hints of coffee and chocolate. Mouthfeel is a tad thin. but I liked this beer.

500 ml bottle. Tanned, big bubbled medium-sized head. Dark brown, almost opaque, ruby hued body. Cocoa and milk-chocolate aroma. Some nutty, almost cheesy scents. Light sour-sweet malt flavor. Also some mild spices and chocolate. Low on the hops. Medium body. A faint bitterness in a sour-malty ending. Does not stand out, but goes well down.

Huge brown-beige lasting head. Deep dark red barely translucent body. Roasty milky chocolatey aroma with earthy coffee notes. Sweetish mild salty earthy milky coffee and chocolate taste, balanced and harmonic. Mid-bodied. Dry roasty papery coffee aftertaste with floral notes. Nice, and unusual. (0.5l bottle, Centra, Oslo.)
