"Seaweed Ale"
Prior to the 1850's there were many Scottish coastal alehouses which brewed their own ales, these ales were made from local malted barley which was grown on fields fertilised with seaweed. This environment gave the barley a very specific flavour which we have recreated by the inclusion of fresh seaweed in the mash tun. In addition to the seaweed (bladder rack) harvested on the Argyll coast we have used only organically grown malt - the darker malts roasted by ourselves.
Kelpie is a rich chocolate ale which has an aroma of fresh seabreeze and a distinctive malty texture.
Drink lightly chilled in a wine glass.

500ml bottle from Geronimo, Tapiola, Espoo. Pours dark reddish brown with a tan head. Malty, roasted aroma, some dark bread, coffee and chocolate. Roasted malt dominates the flavour, there’s some chocolate, coffee and tobacco and a hint of hops. The seaweed I cannot distinguish. Dry, roasted finish.

Shared bottle at Cardinal. Clear coca cola colored body wit a light brown small head. Toasted tobacco and malts on the nose. Smooth and medium bodied. Toasted malty and a hint of salty dark fruits. Lovely.

Bottled. Another bottle from my batch of 26 bottles I got for my thirsty five b-day. Aroma of roasted malt, some espresso, dark chocolate. Medium carbonation, sopay head, vanishing quickly. Taste is watery, similar to a stout. Refreshing. Some hints of dark chocolate. Bitter finish. Overall this beer is weak, but I think this is not my type of beer (yet). One of my forst experiences with english ales.

A - Dark brown/red with 1 finger of tan head. S - Roasted malts, cocoa powder, prunes, raisins, hints of soy sauce, alcohol. T - Follows the nose, roasted malt, mildly smoked soy sauce, slightly brackish. The finish reminds me of watered down coke in way. M - Medium thin body, low carbonation. Didn’t get any seaweed notes. The malts are nice but are very mellow and a bit watered down. Serving type: bottle 09-26-2011

33cl bottle, bierpost.de - Pours a brackish brown with neglectable head. Aroma is understated, vegetable broth, grainy dark malt soup and some tang. Watery body makes most of the briny taste apparent only as velar aftertaste, where the seaweed does leave the strongest impression, as this weak porter/ESB is too weak and watery to transport any of the chocolate malt qualities. Still pleasant, but with the seaweed afttaste overpowering even the natural hops, not sure when this will be needed again...

Bottle from Global Wines, Bearwood. Dark. Very smooth in the gob, washes over the tongue and tonsils. Balance of sweet malt and err choc and water. Not sure I can detect the seaweed. Like it a lot, even though it seems like a weak Porter or dark, smooth ESB.

Smaczne i specyficzne to Ale. Pachnace czekolada, cynamonem i troche wanilia. piwo o sredniej piance ale znikajacej niestety szybko. O rubinowo-brazowym kolorze. W smaku czekolada, przyprawy i troche jakby morskiej bryzy. Wyraznie goryczkowe i palone jest to piwo.

500ml bottle - Black body with a light tan foamy head. A roasted malt aroma with bitter chocolate. A smooth palate at first that becomes refreshing and more malty and salty through the swallow. A good interesting and different beer.

Bottle. Decent dark beer with a pleasant mild chocolate malt aroma. I want to say this tastes of fresh seaspray and a bracing wind, but it didn’t really remind me of the coast. There was a hint of salt to the flavour, which was otherwise malty with hint of chocolate. A little watery and I’d prefer a slightly softer carbonation.

Having the cask version at the Khyber Pass. Billed as Kelpie Seaweed Ale. Poured a dark clear ruby with just a slight foam across the top. Salted red plums. Cashews. Vegemite. Alfalfa. Some earthier notes rounding things out. Bit unusual. Body is quite watery. The cask is likely bringing out the juicier elements, despite the salt.

500ml bottle. Nose of roasted malts. Taste is coffee-like, but then salted. Not much of a bitter. Thin mouth feeling and low carbonation.
