"Seaweed Ale"
Prior to the 1850's there were many Scottish coastal alehouses which brewed their own ales, these ales were made from local malted barley which was grown on fields fertilised with seaweed. This environment gave the barley a very specific flavour which we have recreated by the inclusion of fresh seaweed in the mash tun. In addition to the seaweed (bladder rack) harvested on the Argyll coast we have used only organically grown malt - the darker malts roasted by ourselves.
Kelpie is a rich chocolate ale which has an aroma of fresh seabreeze and a distinctive malty texture.
Drink lightly chilled in a wine glass.

I must say I did not like this at first taste. But the flavor is very complex and very different. It grows on you. This is the most interesting beer I have ever had. I loved it by the time I finished the glass.

Bottle at Oluthuone Kaisla, Helsinki. Poured a clear dark brown with a thin off-white head. The aroma is roasted malt, dark chocolate, coffee, earthy mineral. The flavour is moderate bitter with a light malt bitter light hop palate. Medium bodied with soft carbonation.

Aroma: Really resembles an oyster stout overall- very, very slight brine character with cocoa powder and lean roasted malts. Appearance: Dark brown, nearly black pour with a creamy tan head. Flavor: Matches the nose; you get almost nothing from the seaweed until near the finish, and it’s very, very faint. Personally, I would not have known unless informed. You have to look for it, which means it may be mind over matter. Palate: Light body, creamy texture, flat carbonation, lingering finish. Overall: A good beer, but does feel a bit like a novelty.

Concept far exceeds brew! Bland, sweet, taste and light brown color. Thin! I didn’t detect any salty contribution.

500ml bottle from Appellation Wines. Pours clear dark brown, thick beige head. Aromas of chocolate and malt... So maltesers then. Taste had a very faint saltiness, but you need to search for it. Otherwise, chocolate malt. Nice enough, if a little thin.

Beese (1526) - Watford, Hertfordshire, ENGLAND - MAY 30, 2014
Cask at The Sir Walter Scott (JDW), Edinburgh Airport on 20 May. Poured a very dark ruby, near black, with a dense creamy head and excellent lacing. Malty aroma, with some brown sugar and herbal notes. Flavours of hay, molasses and tobacco. Finish was coffee, burnt sugar and grain.

500ml bottles. Pours a clear deep ruby, with a small off-white head, which lasts reasonably well and leaves a little lacing. Slight seaweed notes mix with toffee and chocolate malt in the aroma. Briny seaweed and citrus hops up front give way to a malty body of chocolate and rye toast. Mild leafy hops and a touch more seaweed come in at the finish. I’m not really sold on this one: I don’t feel that the seaweed adds all that much to what is otherwise a fairly plain brown ale.

Bottle. Pours a clear dark mahogany color with a tan head and ample lacing. Aroma of roasted malt, chocolate and bit of dark fruit. Taste is similar with roasted malt and chocolate. Light bitterness and a clean finish. Moderate body, smooth and slightly creamy. Nice take on the style.
