COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Virginia’s Devils Backbone Brewing Company, with Brewmaster Jason Oliver, was a perfect partner for us to do a collaboration beer. Not only is Devils Backbone one of the most award winning breweries in the country over the last few years, but Jason hails from Heavy Seas’ home port of Baltimore. Also, Ernie Igot, Heavy Seas’ Brewmaster, is clearly a lager lover and specialist, and he and Jason had a great time conceiving and developing this special lager. It has been a privilege working with both of these gentlemen, and I hope you enjoy the result of this joint effort.

Bottle shared by Brad while watching Le Tour de France. Merci! The beer is a dark chestnut color. Very dark, nearing black. Atop the beer rests nearly an inch of light beige head. Spotty lacing. The aroma is subtle, offering hints of chocolate, roast. Light, simple, mild roast. Easy drinking and soft on the palate. A touch of pine and bitterness. Overall, the flavor is a bit subdued and understated. A decent beer. Nothing wrong with it. Good pairing with some spicy food. Serving type: bottle Reviewed on: 07-21-2012

Very hoppy and light (dark brown rather than black).for a schwarzbier, and over carbonated, but just what one should expect in a "black pilsner". This includes a good bit of dark malt in both the nose and the flavor. Better and stronger flavor than aroma. A successful collaboration producing a nice combination of styles. Better after some warming.

Large tan head with very good retention but minimal lacing. Black, ruby edged brew, nice lookin. Soft nose of lightly sweet malts, bread and a bit of roast and chocolate. Body is nicely medium, oily on the palate, gentle carbonation, slick and coating.Pleasent flavors of roast and light smoke, notes of chocolate and coffee, bit of caramel and butter. A tastey, fairly black brew, caught me off guard. I had a 14 hour day at work today, maybe i,m delirious?? Tastes real nice though. Finish is fairly dry and roasty with maybe some black patent? IDK? Just hit the spot. Bomber from statelineliquors. Ya happy Todd?!

Double deuce - pours dark ruby brown with beige head. Nose is roasted caramel and chocolate. Flavor adds floral hops. Better than any of the other schwarzbiers I’ve had. Watery to sticky. Light to medium sweet with slightly less bitterness. Coffee aftertaste. This is giving me hope that this style is not as bad I thought it was.

On tap 1/2 pint at Gilly's Craft Beer & Fine Wine in Rockville, MD. Nearly opaque, deep mahogany with thin buff head and good lacing that starts very nicely, but doesn't linger. . Aroma of roasted malt, sweet pilsner malt, grain, chocolate and nuts Taste of roasted grain, sweet pilsner malt, pineapple, smokey chocolate and nuts. Medium/light body with medium/high carbonation. I liked the pilsner attributes with the dark, smokey roasted aspects. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

22oz bottle. Pours a very, dark brown color with a medium, frothy, beige head. Smells of roasted malt, coffee, nuts, and some earthy hops. Taste is similar to the aroma, with roasted malt, coffee, bittersweet chocolate, earthy hops, and some nuts. Medium body, moderate carbonation.

Uploading old ratings that were missing comments. Nose was a little weak and taste was pretty traditional pilsner. Not a lot worth noting outside of the color. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

This was a very easy drinking black beer with a bit of roast and chocolate in the taste. Hops were present but it was more or less a dark malty beer. Interesting and enjoyable.

Draft at Tattooed Mom. Poured a dark red brown. Fizzy off-white head. Burnt wheat. Dark chocolate caramel malt. More bitter dry than sweet. Good carbonation. Nice full well blended flavors. Charcoal finish. Low on alcohol but high on taste.

Bottle, courtesy Birgadier, thanks! Pours black with a tan head, good retention/little lace. Aroma of chocolate, lager yeast, light roast. Taste is grassy, roast, chocolate, light cream. Palate is soft, slick, light chocolate finish. Good.
