COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Virginia’s Devils Backbone Brewing Company, with Brewmaster Jason Oliver, was a perfect partner for us to do a collaboration beer. Not only is Devils Backbone one of the most award winning breweries in the country over the last few years, but Jason hails from Heavy Seas’ home port of Baltimore. Also, Ernie Igot, Heavy Seas’ Brewmaster, is clearly a lager lover and specialist, and he and Jason had a great time conceiving and developing this special lager. It has been a privilege working with both of these gentlemen, and I hope you enjoy the result of this joint effort.

Black with a decent brown head. Aroma is slight roasted malt, mildly burnt. Flavor is burnt coffee with a light finish. Really tastes like it’s trying to be a porter instead of a pilsner, not as good as other black lagers I’ve had. A little more body and it could have been a well rounded porter. As it is, slightly over burnt for a black lager.

Dissapointing. Beautiful black pour with a rich brown head. Bitter for bitters sake. I will not be buying this beer.

22oz bottle. Pours a very, dark brown color with a medium, frothy, beige head. Smells of roasted malt, coffee, nuts, and some earthy hops. Taste is similar to the aroma, with roasted malt, coffee, bittersweet chocolate, earthy hops, and some nuts. Medium body, moderate carbonation.

Draft courtesy of James at Blowtoad, thank you sir! Very dark brown, thick beige head with hood retention. Aroma of coffee grounds and grass. Taste is similar, very roasty. Could use more hops.

Poured a very dark yet clear brown color with a medium sized off-white head that faded quickly. Not too much in the aroma but some chocolate and caramel. Some toffee as well. Some yeast and skunk too. Taste has an interesting combination of flavors. A good amount of cheesy notes with some egg and grains. Chocolate and hay towards the finish. Quite drinkable.

Draft at NOVA BrewFest. Poured a dark ruby color, some translucency, off-white head. Aroma was sweet malts, toasted, touch of nut, caramel. Flavor was caramel, sweet malts, touch of grass. Interesting colab.

bomber ----> glass - Nice blend of well-rounded caramel malts with a pretty assertive hopiness on the back end. I couldn’t really detect an aroma of this thing, so that did negatively effect the overall, but no so much my enjoyment. Another good "budget" bomber from Heavy Seas.

Pours an opaque cola brown with a fairly thick, if not too persistent, tan head. Malty aroma has hints of burnt hops and a fruity touch. Flavor has a core of roast malt and hints of charred wood and - horehound? Caramel? Not sure. Smooth texture is a teensy on the watery side and has about average fizz. OK, not Heavy Seas’ best, and I hope not Devils Backbone’s best - but an enjoyable beer.

On tap 1/2 pint at Gilly's Craft Beer & Fine Wine in Rockville, MD. Nearly opaque, deep mahogany with thin buff head and good lacing that starts very nicely, but doesn't linger. . Aroma of roasted malt, sweet pilsner malt, grain, chocolate and nuts Taste of roasted grain, sweet pilsner malt, pineapple, smokey chocolate and nuts. Medium/light body with medium/high carbonation. I liked the pilsner attributes with the dark, smokey roasted aspects. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Dark brown with a small tan head., light off white lace. Heavily roasted, earthy, light cocoa, ash. Medium bodied, roasty, ashy, lightly astringent. Easy drinking, not a ton of flavor, but solid and inoffensive.
