COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Virginiaís Devils Backbone Brewing Company, with Brewmaster Jason Oliver, was a perfect partner for us to do a collaboration beer. Not only is Devils Backbone one of the most award winning breweries in the country over the last few years, but Jason hails from Heavy Seasí home port of Baltimore. Also, Ernie Igot, Heavy Seasí Brewmaster, is clearly a lager lover and specialist, and he and Jason had a great time conceiving and developing this special lager. It has been a privilege working with both of these gentlemen, and I hope you enjoy the result of this joint effort.

Pours black with a tall, long lasting off-white head. Light roast malt aroma, light ash. The flavor is light roast malt with just enough hop bittering to balance this one out nicely. Easy drinking. A great one for those who think they donít like "dark" beer.

THOUGHTS: Great beer. I donít know what would make this a black pilsner as opposed to a schwarzbier, which is an already established term. In other words, itís a great schwarzbier. The low ABV s the 22 oz. bottle an easy solo project. This is what Guinness Black Lager should have been like. Itís like a crisp porter. TECHNICAL: Drank 3/7/2013. Bottle. Poured a dark brown cola color with bright red highlights and looks nearly black in the glass with an average, tan head that mostly diminished and left good lacing. The aroma contained light grain, coffee and roasted malt; light grassy hops; vanilla and hints of cola. The initial flavor was slightly sweet and lightly bitter and acidic; while the finish was lightly sweet and bitter. There was chocolate, roasted malt, crisp grassy hops, coffee, slight licorice, caramel malt and grain. The medium body was little creamy with fizzy carbonation and a lightly astringent finish.

22oz bottle. Pours a very, dark brown color with a medium, frothy, beige head. Smells of roasted malt, coffee, nuts, and some earthy hops. Taste is similar to the aroma, with roasted malt, coffee, bittersweet chocolate, earthy hops, and some nuts. Medium body, moderate carbonation.

Double deuce - pours dark ruby brown with beige head. Nose is roasted caramel and chocolate. Flavor adds floral hops. Better than any of the other schwarzbiers Iíve had. Watery to sticky. Light to medium sweet with slightly less bitterness. Coffee aftertaste. This is giving me hope that this style is not as bad I thought it was.

22 oz. bottle. Pours dark brown in color with a medium sized beige head. The aroma has roasted grains, some earthy notes with some mild fruits. The flavor was roasted malts, earthy, mild fruit character, but comes off a bit thin and watery compared to other readily available schwarzbiers (ex. Dark Horse). Just OK.

Dark brown with an amber tint and a tan head. Malt and citrus aroma. Roasted malt flavor with citrus finish.

Thanks to Bert for this awesome bottle from Maryland. Pours black, opaque with just a little light at the bottom when held to the light. 2 thin fingers of foam that fell fast to a filmy cap and ring. Soapy lace. Nose is strong with toast, roasted grains and floral hops. Thereís some grass from the hops but almost no fruit except for a hint of dark fruits. Smells a lot like cola. Nose has chocolate but itís not sweet. It has plenty of grain. Thereís some caramel and molasses as ti warms. Taste is strong malt. Toasted, a little smoke, the mild chocolate cocoa powder, and walnut. The hops are floral and earthy with plenty of grass but no real fruit on the palate. Also there is not really any malt sweetness on the palate so it has a dry quality. Body is thin and a little over carbonated. Finishes with toast, roast, coffee and a moderate bitter. It was hard to want more of it because it lacked any kind of sweetness. It tasted a lot like dry cheerios. For the style itís right on. A neutral malt character with nothing burnt, moderate roast and a bitter chocolate flavor featuring a moderate hop bitterness.

Dark with a amber hue and a foamy(ish) white head. Candy malt aroma with a very slight taint of skunkiness. Bitter, smokey, malty, grassy, molasses taste. A bit thin and carbonated. A winter session beer.

Slutfest! Black and slightly brown at the edges. Aroma is strongly floral hops. Flavor is light chocolate and floral hops. Not bad, but not really great either. Like the idea here though, hope they tweak it a bit and keep at it.

Milk chocolate, subtle coffee, and noble hops on the nose. Dark brown-black with a moderate, khaki head. Roasty with a hoppy snap, very balanced. Medium body, lively carbonation, and finishes very cleanly with lingering roasted chocolate and grassy, hop tones.

Bottle. Pours clear black with dark brown highlights and a medium to small, frothy off-white head, short retention, leaving the head at the edge of the glass with ringed lacing. Aroma is nutty and toast malt with dates and light earthy hops. Flavor is malt dominant with dark malt derived fruits, light hops and bitterness, definitely balanced toward the malt with a sweet finish. Light body and medium carbonation.
