When we decided to resurrect the Big DIPA, we knew that we needed to make it bigger and better. We’ve brought the beer back with the same 10.5%ABV as before, the same massive amounts of hops as before, but this time, we’ve aged it on oak spirals. Oak spirals suspended in solution allow more surface area to come into contact with the beer increasing the oak presence without increasing exposure time. This results in a smoother oak flavor and further compliments the extraordinary hop characteristics. Cheers!

Golden orange, half a finger head, nice creamy lacing. Pretty juicy on the nose, nice orange peel, lemon zest and chalky used foot powder. Taste is really pleasant. Not bitter, not too malty but it’s a big beer. tastes like a citrus infused english barleywine, biscuit, fruit, mild bitterness, tasty but pretty forgettable.

Oak aging an average beer will not make it great. This beer is OK but doesn’t really stand out in the vast arena of IIPAs. Aroma was really good. Oak, caramel and vanilla. Very nice. Pour was a nice clear burnt orange with a one finger off white head. Taste was average. A very muted mix of the same aromas. Vanilla, oak and caramel with not much hop flavor. The finish is quick and sticky with the malt leaving a sweet flavor in the mouth. If nothing else, this beer hides the alcohol content wonderfully. Just wish it tasted better

22 ounce bottle into tulip glass, 2013 bottling. Pours fairly crystal clear orange copper color with a 2 finger dense off white head with great retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lingers. Spotty soapy lacing clings down the glass. Aromas of big orange zest, orange rind, tangerine, grapefruit, caramel, floral, light pine, oak, honey, toast, and floral earthiness. Very nice aromas with good complexity of hop flavors; with a very balanced malt backbone and light-moderate oak presence. Taste of grapefruit, orange zest, tangerine, orange rind, floral, light pine, grass, caramel, honey, oak, toast, and floral earthiness. Light floral bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of citrus, citrus rind, caramel, floral, grass, pine, honey, oak, toast, and floral earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Very nice complexity of hop and malt flavors; with a very balanced malt backbone with oak that isn’t overdone, and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and fairly full bodied; with a creamy, slick, and fairly sticky mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with only a small warming noticed after the finish. Overall this is a damn nice oak aged DIPA. All around great balance and nice complexity of hop/malt/oak flavors; and very smooth to sip on. A very enjoyable offering.

Pours a clear, appetizing chestnut with a fluffy and fairly thick pale wheat head. Aroma is quite hoppy, mainly woody, not as strong as I expected but still inviting. The oak definitely comes forth in the flavor, though, which is hoppy and a little malty, and has hints of caramel and honey sweetness. The alcohol rears its head in some sips to let you know this is a high-grav! Smooth texture is firm and syrupy but a bit lacking in fizz. Still, this is Oak-K.

Bottle poured into glass. While this was a pretty decent DIPA (nice floral hops etc) the oak spiral flavor didn’t really impress me. It was just a little too subtle, didn’t really make it’s presence known all too much.

Bottle. 2013 Vintage. Amber pour with a tall, foamy tan head. Aroma is citrus and pine with big caramel notes, toffee, light oak and sweet malt. Taste is soft oak with citrus, light pine, floral and earthy hops, caramel, light toffee and sweet, chewy malt. Body is medium with a light resinous feel and a moderate, bubbly carbonation. Ends with more of the malt and caramel up front and the citrus, oak and pine trailing and int he background.

From a 22oz bottle shared at Ryan’s. Pours a clear amber with a thick off white head. Aroma earthy hop aroma with a hint of vanilla. Luscious mouthfeel. Strong malt backbone and oak notes smooth out the hops. Bitter finish.
