COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
While the style is an oxymoron, this ale is an variation of our "Loose Cannon" IPA with an obvious dark note.

Tap at Beer Engine. Dark brown pour with a nice pillowy beige head. Aroma is muted citrus hops. Medium to slightly thinner palate. Taste is chocolate, slight roast, and slight hop. Enjoyable.

12 oz bottle via 6pack from Spirits Toms RIver. Poured a good looking super dark brown body with a slightly smaller than average foamy light beige head with very sparse lacing. Aroma is sadly not what I had hoped for. Notes are mostly weak roasted malts, somewhere between cola and black oreo cookies, minus the creamy filling of course, with a slight hint of vegetable soup and citrus rind hops. Body is meh overall, medium bodied with softer carbonation and an almost milky mouthfeel. Flavor isn’t really any better than the aroma. Notes of wet toast, hint of milk and some odd citrus towards the end. Actually this beer is turning into a let down for me.

Very dark brown, small tan head. Aroma roasted, nutty, earthy. Medium full body with no alcohol and small carbonation. Flavor has slight up front mocha-like sweetness but ends mostly dry but not really hoppy. Roasted flavors throughout. More drinkable than would think from the first few sips. Interesting.

Travilah Beer & Wine, Rockville sixer ($10): Pours black with a beige head. Aroma is roasted malts and hops. Pretty straightforward black IPA, but very well-balanced. Not as hoppy as some black IPAs are, but that is probably a good thing. Very sessionable and too easy to drink for its comparatively high ABV. The normal loose cannon is better in my opinion.

12oz bottle. Poured a near pitch black color with a very tiny dark tan head. Aroma was hoppy, with a solid roasted malt body. Tasty, citrus, touch malty. Enjoyable.

This beer starts with a mild roast aroma, with not many hops present that I can find. It pours an opaque black, that you can barely see through when held up to a light, with just a cap of light tan head. There’s a little punch of citrus hops in the flavor, although it is fairly muted, and blended with a touch of roast. I’m a fan of the Loose Cannon and Black IPA’s, I just found this example to be underwhelming.

Tap. Pours black with a small, fizzy off-white head with short retention and light lacing. Aroma is earthy and herbal hops, raisins, prunes and light smoke/peat with roast malt. Flavor is heavy hops and medium bitterness, supporting malt and dark fruity esters with a dry finish. Medium body, warmth and carbonation.

12oz bottle thanks to ryan. Deep brown pour with a tan ring of head. Nose is cream, citrus, and roast. Chocolate up front with a smooth mouthfeel and citrus hop finish.

Pours a deep, rich, opaque sable with a fairly substantial tan head that leaves a decent amount of lacing. Strong aroma is quite hoppy and evergreen with an undertone of sour citrus, mainly grapefruit with a touch of tangerine. Hoppy, smoky flavor has grapefruit, tangerine and roast coffee notes - like a good IPA, yet clearly the "black" variety. I love this style! Smooth, firm texture has a good fizz and leaves a smoky, hoppy tingle.
