Dark brown, nearly black with a mocha head. Smells of roasted malt and caramel. The taste starts off mild with some earthy hops, turns to sweet caramel and roasted malt. The finishes with mild chocolate and coffee bitterness. Overall very nice. Can see mysrlf buying it again.

12oz bottle poured into a tumbler glass. Super dark brown with a small dark beige head. Pleasant aromas of dark chocolate, fresh coffee, wood and piney hops. Cocoa flavors, with espresso, med-hi bitterness and rich roasted malts. Med-full bodied, softly carbonated, creamy and well balanced, relatively to the style. Nice.

Pours black like a stout with some tan head that dissipated quickly leaving decent lacing. Aroma is roasted malt with "some" hops. The hop aroma is very mild compared to your normal IPA. Taste definitely follows the nose. Medium bodied and creamy.

Bottle: pours blackish dish water, fine khaki head. Mild nose of roasts malts, coffee, pine, toffee. More resin, earthy tones and coffee bitterness on the palate. Kind of bitter but yet a ton on the finish. Nothing wrong here just nothing to rave about either. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bottled. Black pour with ruby highlights. Off white head with good lacing. Caramel malt, maybe a little chocolate, though perhaps that's just the color influencing the flavor. A nice hop flavor to this one. Pineapple, spice, mango. Medium body. Quite a nice IPA, regardless of the color. ---Rated via Beer Buddy from my iPad.

I like that this black IPA seems to be an IPA first and a dark beer second. Many black IPAs really just seem to be porters or stouts with extra hops, whereas this seems to be an IPA brewed with some dark or roasted malts. Much better than the Sam Adams take on this style. A more authentic example of what you’d expect from the adjective "black" being applied to the style IPA. If the style was "hoppy porter", I’d go with other brewer’s interpretations, but its not, so Heavy Seas I think gets this right. Having said that, the label itself correctly notes that the style is an oxymoron BLACK India PALE ale, and I’m not sure I’m sold on the style in general yet.

Draft at the beer authority NYC. Wow. Deep black color with a huge thick head and it looks heavy like oil. Taste is smooth, not overly hoppy or heavy. Very nice drinkable beer ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
