Style: American IPA
Hops: Warrior, Simcoe, Palisade, Centennial, Cascade, Citra
Malts: 2-Row, Caramalt, Munich

Our flagship beer, Loose Cannon wins people over at first smell. The carefully cultivated interplay of Simcoe, Palisade, and Centennial creates a most fragrant IPAóits nose bursts with notes of grapefruit, herbs, and pine. Bitterness is somewhat subdued by the floral quality that pervades the taste. The color is burnished gold, and the mouthfeel is creamy. A strong malt backbone balances out the triple-hopped beer. Its nickname, Hop3, comes from the brewing process: our brewers hop Loose Cannon in the boil, the hopback, and the fermenter. It won a second place CAMRA award at the 2010 Great British Beer Festival.

Despite the advertising of the massive amount of hops in the thing, and the reviews that talk about it, I actually find this beer to be well balanced with a significant malt taste to it. Maybe itís because it seems to contain some hops and malts that arenít in a lot of IPAs, and is missing other standard ones. This really seems like something thatís in a bit of a different category from some of the other IPAs I drink to some degree, though tís not that it doesnít fit the style, itís just a different way of approaching it. A lot of times I drink a hoppy IPA and then may want a second beer thatís a different style, whereas this I could see as a go-to beer. Very refreshing, and the malt presence isnít too heavy at all, nor do you feel like youíre missing out on hops, they are just a bit less harsh, but still spicy. Real flavorful while still being very drinkable without much dryness (In other words, itís not made more drinkable by being watered down, it has every bit of flavor as other IPAs if not more, itís just a more drinkable flavor). I remember a friend taking me out for a meal in Baltimore years ago and this was on special and I had several with some crab cakes, great combo. By the way, did I mention this is a Baltimore beer? Thatís a plus for me as a Baltimore kind of guy. Regular price is a bit expensive for me, but itís on sale or in a mix pack thatís on sale, or at a gathering or whatever, often enough that itís not unavailable, and as other beers go up in price, this seems more and more in the general ball park of the cheap craft beers (Often regularly priced $9.99/6). Would be interested in a $15-$16 twelve pack (Save a few bucks) if they could pull it off, but havenít seen that format.

UPDATED: MAY 23, 2015 Bottle pour celebrating graduation in MD. Nice cloudy amber with fluffy white head which lasted well. Floral aroma with strong hints of citrus. Initial taste of grapefruit with aftertaste of pine and tar. Not overly bitter for an IPA. Good find by friends at local establishment.

UPDATED: MAY 5, 2015 On tap. 12 oz pour into a shaker pint. Appropriate temperature. Nice fluffy foamy white head. Good retention and lots of lacing. Clear, great carbonation, and golden. Nose is fruity with a little pine. Citrus. Centennial comes through well. Medium body and creamy. Perfect for a big IPA. Taste is awesome. Strong grapefruit, candied citrus, some pine, a little malt. Beautifully balance. This beer (or several) would be great on its own or with dinner.

On tap at Mellow Mushroom in Acworth, GA. Aroma is sweet pine, citrus, grapefruit, tropical fruits. Taste is citrus marmalade, mild hops, mango, pineapple. A strange combination of rich and refreshing on par with a tangy tropical marmalade.

Bottle. Golden, cloudy. small to average and mostly diminishing head. Moderate, malty and lightly sweetish - sweetish aroma, light caramel and some tropical fruitiness, some grapefruit - piney hoppyness. Body is medium to full, malty and lightly sweetish - sweetish flavor, light - some caramel and some tropical fruitiness, some grapefruit - piney hoppyness. Finish is average, malty and lightly sweetish, ight caramel and some tropical fruitiness, some piney - light grapefruit hoppyness. Decently hopped IPA, but too sweet/too much caramel for me.

Tasted on cask in a mini Willybecher glass at the 2015 Schlafly Repeal of Prohibition Festival. It poured a cloudy orange amber colour with weak off-white foam. A strong American IPA in the Arrogant Bastard school of thought, rich Munich malt sweetness, intense grapefruity and resiny hops, black currant and ganja. Medium body and low carbonation, extra beneficial yeast and mineral essence in mouthfeel due to cask-conditioning, some smooth alcoholic warmth. Predictable and unmemorable, good not great.
