This malty lager is our most award-winning beer: it took gold, silver, and bronze medals at the Great American Beer Festival from 2006 to 2010. Cutlass Amber has a toasted, biscuity character. The slight sweetness comes from Crystal malt. Vienna malt contributes a remarkable smoothness and Munich malt gives an amber color and delicate aroma. Tettnang hops infuse the beer with a slight earthiness. Formerly named Heavy Seas Märzen, Cutlass Amber is our second best-selling beer. In 2012, Cutlass Amber won a silver medal at the World Beer Cup in the Vienna Lager category.

12 oz bottle poured into a regular glass. A: Pours a golden amber color with fantastic clarity. The head is a one finger offwhite color with average retention and texture. Not much lacing is left on the glass. S: Weak. There’s light nuttiness, some caramel...and that’s it. T: A little stronger than the nose, but this is still rather bland. There’s a subtle, toasted nuttiness I find pleasant in conjunction with the caramel...a shame it’s so mild. Okay enough, but could have been quite good with a stronger flavor bill. M: This is too heavily bodied given its light flavor, and a little overcarbonated as well; it’s just not as drinkable as it could, or should, be. A bit of finishing residual sugar gives it a nice aftertaste, at least. O: What is this, National Mediocre Beer Month? I feel like I’ve given more 2.7’s these past few days than a junior high tri-county gymnastics meet. There just isn’t much to this, and it doesn’t have the drinkability to compensate. Not a beer to be avoided, but one you should think long and hard about before dropping a Hamilton on.

Aroma: Toasted malts with hints of skunks yeast aromas. Appearance: Clear amber with rich tan head. Taste: Medium sweetness straight through. Palate: Medium body, sticky texture, soft carbonation, long sweet finish. Overall: A bit too sweet for my taste. Not bad, though.

Bottle: The aroma consists of light-moderate fruit, light caramel, brown sugar, toasty notes, and a hint of apple. It pours a transparent amber with a one finger off-white head that quickly fades to a thin film outlined by a slightly thicker ring. The flavor starts with light-moderate toasty caramel with a touch of brown sugar and fruit. The finish has light apple with a touch of roast and earthy bitterness. It’s medium bodied with a somewhat sticky mouthfeel. Overall, this one is a little too sweet for me.

The body has a very clear golden honey color with an average size, just off white colored head. The head fades to just a wispy thing layer of foam which makes no lacing on the glass. There is some sweet bready and biscuity maltiness with some leafy, slightly sour hop notes. It has a medium body with mildly sweet bready and biscuity maltiness with nutty husk like notes as well. The hops also add a touch of leafy bitterness to the finish. The palate is smooth and easy drinking with average balanced carbonation.

Pours light amber with a thin layer of fizzy head. Aroma is mainly yeast esters with some caramel and biscuit side notes. Flavor is very sweet with fruit, caramel and floral notes. The aftertaste is reminiscent of a sweet apple cider with slight nutty character.

Pretty unpalatable brew. Flavor is light grass and not very smooth at all. Would expect a bit more from this company.

I typically dislike Marzens. However, this one is okay. Nothing special, but a decent enough malt profile with subdued hops. Better than most for the style.
