A: The pour is a surprisingly clear amber color with just about no head and minimal visible carbonation. S: I don’t really pick up much bourbon, but some hints of vanilla do make their way into the nose. The nose is mostly toffee, molasses, and a bit of caramel. The usual aromas, but somewhat muted. T: The flavor is just as flat and one-note as the nose (if not a bit more). There is more bread than anything else on the nose with molasses and a hint of vanilla, along with some alcohol. M: The body is quite thin for a barleywine and the carbonation is minimal. D: A rather bland effort for a barrel aged barleywine. I would not really bother with this one.

Draft. Poured reddish brown color with an average frothy light brown head that mostly lasted with good lacing. Moderate to heavy dark fruit, toasted malt, alcohol and wood aroma. Medium to full body with a smooth texture and flat carbonation. Moderate to heavy dark fruit bittersweet flavor with a medium to heavy bourbon bittersweet finish of moderate to long duration. This is a complex standout beer.

Bottle. Pours clear tawny/brown with a small, fizzy light tan head, short retention with light lacing. Aroma is cookie and caramel malt, brown sugar, oak, vanilla, light bourbon, dates, and figs. Flavor is malt dominant with oak, light bourbon, vanilla, brown sugar, toffee, figs, dates and a sweet finish. Full body, high warmth and medium carbonation.

hopscotch (9120) - Indian River County, Florida, USA - JUL 6, 2010
Bottle… Mostly clear burnt orange ale with a small, creamy, off-white head. Good retention. Smells like a straight-forward, simple, non-estery English barley wine – caramel and vanilla are highlights. The bourbon barrel aging doesn’t detract; it mellows the beer while adding to the vanilla nuance. Medium to full-bodied and oily with gentle carbonation. Flavor-wise, toffee and vanilla are the stars here. A kiss of butterscotch works its way into the mix. Malty, sweet, warming finish. Kudos to ygtbsm94 for providing this bottle!

daknole (9058) - Scottsdale, Arizona, USA - JUN 29, 2010
Clear amber pour. Small head. Vanilla, caramel, brown sugar, raisins, alcohol, bourbon, toothpick and no hops in the aroma. Flavor is sweet and loaded with vanilla. Barrel notes are nice, but the base beer isn’t helping this one. An odd fruity note seems to battle the bourbon, wood, vanilla and caramel. Odd.

Drake (8505) - Free Union, Virginia, USA - AUG 7, 2011
22 ounce bottle, 2010 vintage, opened 7/6/11. Pours a hazy reddish color with a fizzy tan head. Fairly poor head retention and lacing. Aroma of toffee, bourbon, wood, cola and a bit of a cheesy note. The taste is toffee, caramel, bourbon, peppery wood notes, vanilla, anise, bitter hop finish. A little bit on the thin side. Some alcohol warmth.

This is an excellent and maybe underrated BA barleywine. The barrel doesn’t add too much or too little, just right.

CaptainCougar (7131) - Columbia, Maryland, USA - JUN 4, 2010
Pours a transparent deep amber copper with a spotty-lacing off-white head. Has a sweet dark caramely nose with some vanilla bourbon notes and some piny hops. Starts with pretty good sweet sticky fullness with caramel overtones and some warming astringent bitterness before the finish. Could use a little more balance, but the bourbon aging still enhances the base beer.

Courtesy of markwise. It pours clear mahogany with tan head. The aroma starts with sweet bourbon and then moving toward mildly harsh boozy bourbon as well as prunes, figs, raisins, molasses and some heat at the end of the draw. The taste is smooth sweet inviting molasses, caramel, vanilla, sweet bourbon, spicy oak, raisins, figs and a thin strata of dates. Yummy.
