3.6 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 15/20
Finishing my last bottle of my HS barrel aged beers. Bomber into snifter glass, clear rich dark amber color with thin light tan head. Pretty sweet aroma, detect caramel malt, dark fruits (prunes, raisins, berries), wine and oak notes. Taste follows the aroma, sweet and fruity, adding notes of chocolate and toffee, with some booze showing up on the finish. Rich body, mild carbonation, sticky, smooth and slick. Great improvement on their barley wine.

3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
Having just had the regular and BBA versions, it is time to hit this one up. I’m anxious.
Murky, dirty brown with a nougat sheet of foam. There is the slightest, bloody red ruddy tone. The base beer smells profoundly of cocoa, this one has a hint, but mostly I get oak, red wine (cheap red wine), some hints of a tannic, metallic tone. Honestly reminds me of the nose on many Oud Bruins I’ve had.
Flavor does not follow the nose. Sweet, malty; infused with toffe and caramel tones this is accented with some fruity character, but nothing tannic. Some hints of raisin and if I reach, a little bit of juicy berry, but that’s a stretch.
Medium on full bodied with low carb. Somewhat of a velvety feel. I’m unimpressed on how the barrel impacted this brew. It’s nice, but I would take the regular, unaged version over either variants.

Thanks for the share, OmegaX. The aroma on this was was earthy, woody and full of cherries and toffee. This was a smooth, fruity barleywine with a soft tannin in the finish. Plenty of berries in the finish with a bit of heat as well.

Bottle sampled at a tasting. From notes. Red berries and dark fermented fruits with a decent dose of oaky goodness. Very good.

4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Shared a 2011 vintage brown bomber, aged in Cabernet bottles at Thanksgiving dinner 2012, thanks John! It poured a hazy deep amber colour with moderate beige head and some lace. Aromas of malt, caramel, toffee, dried fruit, earthy and citrusy hops, bread, strong barrel aspects: toasted hardwood, vanilla, tart grapeskin tannins, pleasant booze, perfumey and sherry-like. Intense flavours too: rich malty sweetness, balanced hoppy bitterness, complex graininess, wood aged aspects again. Full bodied, chewy mouthfeel, average carbonation, long-lasting alcoholic kick. Another excellent beer from Heavy Seas. A brave idea well executed. Unique. Memorable. Delicious.

4.5 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20
From the bottle, pours very dark red with a thin white head. Aroma is sweet and heavy, a bit of dark cherry. Taste is fantastic. Thick, sweet, cherries, molasses, a hint of alcohol even though you know it’s there. Very smooth, a hint of hops in the aftertaste but balanced by a malty sweetness. There is almost a wine quality given to the flavor and feel, though that could be influenced by the named Cabernet aging. This is a really good beer. Probably my favorite of the mutiny fleet so far.

2.6 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 10/20
In short: An orgy of maderisation flavors. Not my thing.
How: Bottle 22oz, 2012 vintage, shared with friends at a tasting.
The look: Clear dark burgundy body topped by a beige ring of foam.
In long: Nose is extreme-maderisation, I’ve had 10+ years old beers that smell less like maderisation than this relatively fresh beer. Taste is more of the same. There is some toffee, there is vinous flavors, there is ripe dark cherries, there is other stuff, but mostly it tastes like an extremely maderised beer. If you are want to know what a maderised beer tastes like and you don’t have the patience to age a Thomas Hardy Ale for 20 year old, there you go. I can see some low and high ratings for this beer, this is the type of tasty beer that can be a hit or miss depending on the type of beer drinker you are, I cannot speak about the person just above this rating or the person just below this rating, but I can tell you that the guy writing this rating is a drunk.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
2012 Bottle. 5/11/13. Pours deep brown with a very bubbly off-white head. Aroma is excellent; caramel, grapes, toffee, slightly sour, bourbon, some solvent. Taste is wonderful; alcohol, lots of toffee and caramel, fruity, some sharp spicy notes; finish is chocolate, toffee,, leather, long bitterness. This one is really doing it for me. No lacing. Medium carbonation. Rich, chewy mouth feel. I’m highly impressed. I would drink this often.

Bottle shared by my buddy Blake, thanks brotha! This one definitely was packing some heat to it. The cabernet gave it a nice spice that I really enjoyed but this could probably be aged for a while.

This is for a 2012 bottle acquired during Free Beek Week (thanks Kier). Aromatics are very interesting.... Best descriptor is musty, wine. If it was a wine I would immediately think it had been corked. Thankfully it is a pretty intense Barleywine! Appearance is light brown and very light wispy head. Taste is instantly reminiscent of a nice Barleywine that was aged in wine barrels!!!! Haha. not a real better descriptor than that... Some mild dark fruits but mainly just grape notes. Palate is full and invigorating. Overall, I think this may have done better fresh but I am very pleased to have tried it.!
