3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 Emeister84 (442) - Charlottesville, Virginia, USA - APR 4, 2013
This below decks was aged for one year: Caramel, toffee, almonds, butter cookies, and raisins on the nose. Clear red with mostly lasting, off-white head. A touch of sweetness, with a lot of bready (some pumpernickel) and nutty flavors, savory, bitter enough, and with some subtle saltiness. Medium-full body, low carbonation, warming, and finishes with some sweet caramel and nutty flavors, and dry hops.
3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20 davey101 (494) - Connecticut, USA - MAR 15, 2013
2011 vintage, 22 oz bomber into a DFH signature glass.
A - Pours a clear burnt red/brown color with a finger of light tan foam which fades away quickly. Average lacing.
S - Toffee, caramel, raisins, and some brown sugar. Light alcohol heat.
T - Similar to the nose with some toffee and caramel drenched raisins. Very much an English style BW. A bit boring and plain but still pretty tasty. Chewy and a bit slick, abv is well hidden.
O - For a $6 bomber of a very traditional English BW this is pretty solid stuff. Its also held up very well to two years of age (unlike their stout...)
3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 11/20 Ret12 (377) - Maryland, USA - MAR 11, 2013
Overall this was a decent beer, very sweet and almost candy like. Poured a deep red with little head retention
3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 bbbeer (411) - Massachusetts, USA - FEB 26, 2013
Deep red with small light tan head. Aroma caramel, brown sugar, slightly fruity. Full body, a little alcohol, syrupy mouthfeel. Sweet malty flavor, minimal hops, some roasted malt and dark fruits. Really a little too sweet but still works pretty well.
3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 Iphonephan (1228) - Virginia, USA - FEB 24, 2013
On draft at the Mad Fox Barley Wine Festival, Falls Church VA. Vintage 2010. Pours a clear dark amber with an off white head. Aroma of raisin and caramel. Same in the flavors with some tart cherry notes. Medium mouthfeel with soft carbonation. Smooth finish and not too boozy.
3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 superspak (1480) - Michigan, USA - FEB 3, 2013
22 ounce bottle into snifter, Fall 2011 bottling. Pours slightly hazy reddish brown color with a 1 finger dense cream colored head with great retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Spotty soapy lacing clings on the glass. Aromas of caramel, raisin, toast, brown sugar, light roast, brown bread, floral, light pine, and herbal earthiness. Very nice aromas with good balance, strength, and complexity. Taste of caramel, toast, brown sugar, raisin, brown bread, light toffee, floral, light pine, light roast, and herbal earthiness. Minimal bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of caramel, toast, brown bread, brown sugar, raisin, light roast, light toffee, floral, and herbal earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Very nice flavor balance and complexity; though it is not as robust as I would expect for the style; with zero cloying flavors present after the finish. Medium carbonation and medium-full bodied; with a fairly creamy and slick mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with hardly any warming noticed after the finish; very smooth to sip on. Overall this is a very nice barelywine. Good balance and complexity; and very smooth to sip on. A very enjoyable offering.
4.3 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 mcnealc31 (221) - Elida, Ohio, USA - JAN 25, 2013
Pours a surprisingly crisp mahogany with ruby edges. Inviting aroma full of malt that you’d expect from a barleywine. Really interesting flavor. Rye, raisins, cedar at first. Hops take hold for a bit, then hints of currants and cherries. Lots of warmth and heat from the 10% ABV. Each sip I’m trying to find a different flavor, and it’s there.
Take some time with this one. Savor it.
3.3 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 13/20 radio_nowhere (417) - Maryland, USA - JAN 24, 2013
2012 bomber into snifter glass. Dark ruby red color with some creamy off-white head. Aroma of rich bready malt, dark fruits, caramel, toffee, brown sugar, some nuttiness and some alcohol. Taste is rich and sweet, adding some roasty notes and light bitterness. Full body, low carbonation, strong, creamy, somewhat syrupy with a clean dry finish. Lower hoppiness and more sweetness than my other barleywines to date but a decent sipper.
3.3 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20 kimjongill (180) - - JAN 16, 2013
Fresh from tap. An overall okay american barleywine with a slightly over-bitter aroma and bite. Dark orange/red pour with thin, off-white head. Not-too-bad slightly hoppy aroma.
3.6 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 jrodooo5 (500) - Wilmington, Delaware, USA - JAN 14, 2013
It pours ruby red with a thin white head that leaves minimal lacing. The aroma is robust with rich malts. The taste is a little off kilter. It’s smooth and malty up front but finishes with a bite and maybe a touch of hops? Kind of a weird balance. Maybe the description is right as it could age well and possibly balance out. Nevertheless, it smell and looks very appeasing. Certainly has potential with a little bit of tweaking.
